Maryland wedding planners eagerly await same-sex marriage

In 2010, there were 16,987 same-sex households in Maryland, 10,903 of which were unmarried, according to the U.S. Census.

“Overall, I think this legislation will be a boom for the wedding industry in Maryland. Since most of the wedding vendors are small businesses, this will be a great benefit because so many have struggled due to (the) downturn in the economy,” Barnhill said.

Onida Cruz, a wedding and event planner that serves Maryland, New Jersey and New York, said she expects to attract new clients if Maryland voters approve a referendum on same-sex marriage this fall. If the referendum passes, same-sex couples will be able to marry beginning in January.

“Many of my past clients have contracted my company for their special events. This past year I have less new clients, because of the residual business I haven’t felt the burn much,” Cruz said. “By legalizing same-sex marriages, I am hopeful that business will increase.”

Besides the economic benefit for the wedding industry, some said they were also happy that same-sex couples could soon have the right to marry.

“Not only do I believe that it is a civil right to be able to decide who you want to marry, I think from an economic standpoint, it can only be a positive influence in the community,” said Annapolis-based wedding planner Charlotte Jarrett.

Jarrett founded Charlotte Jarrett Events in 2010 and booked her first same-sex wedding last month, which will take place next year in Washington, D.C.

“Everyone should have the right to marry whoever they want,” she said. “I’ve been patiently waiting for the day I get to plan my first gay wedding, and finally that day is here.”

Wedding photographer Natalie Franke said she shot her first same-sex wedding in October 2010 in Maryland and found that, “It was just like any other wedding.”

“Many of my same-sex couples have had to overcome a lot to make their relationship last in the face of adversity,” Franke said. “I’m hoping that this legislation will grow the wedding industry in the state of Maryland by giving more couples the opportunity to legally wed.”

Same-sex couples may have more disposable income to spend on their special days than heterosexual couples.

In 2010, unmarried same-sex couples in the United States had an average household income of $103,980, according to the U.S. Census, while unmarried heterosexual couples had an average household income of $62,857. Income data for same-sex couples in Maryland was not available.

If voters approve same-sex marriage later this year, some wedding planners also hope same-sex couples from other states will decide to marry in Maryland.

“So many couples marry in New England, since that area was the leader in legalizing gay marriage, and it really became a true destination spot, nearly overnight. I hope that our metro area can become a similar destination,” said Janice Carnevale of Bellwether Events, who has been planning weddings in the Washington area since 2002.

“I specialize in weddings period, gay or straight,” she added. “I hope, since my livelihood is dependent on people getting married, that legalizing gay marriage in Maryland will cause an uptick in gay weddings in the state.”

Range rides a wedding boom

RUSTIC elegance is delivering millions of dollars as the popularity of the Sunshine Coast hinterland as a wedding destination soars.

With the “vintage country theme” now particularly chic, couples are flying from London, Dubai and Abu Dhabi to marry their sweethearts in Maleny and its surrounds.

As the dollars flow in, Range businesses are angling their wares to cater for the extra customers.

Bookstores are stocking books filled with wedding theme tips and newsagents are building sections dedicated to wedding stationery and cards.

Marlene Murray, the president of Maleny Montville Wedding Professionals, said the region was not only enticing the most meticulous brides but also had the credibility to provide for them.

“We are probably having the busiest year of the decade,” Ms Murray said.

“We have suddenly become trendy.

“There is the demand and we have the professionals who can service the weddings, from all the themeing and furniture to major decorating.

“It’s not just a little chocolate on a table anymore, it’s whole outdoor rooms.”

Ms Murray, who is the manager of the prestige wedding venue Maleny Manor, said that of 120 current bookings only about two were from Sunshine Coast couples.

“The visitors are dining out, staying a few nights and eating at the ice-creamery,” she said.

“We’ve scared ourselves a little with the numbers.”

The 14 booked weddings to be held at Maleny Manor in September alone will inject at least $476,000 into the region through guests’ accommodation, meals, stationery, hair styling, cakes, flowers and transport.

Maleny Chamber of Commerce president Nathan Arrowsmith said the wedding industry was now one of the biggest in the hinterland.

“They spend money on food and tell their friends how great it is here,” he said.

“It’s actually invaluable to our economy having this industry here.

“The whole formal wedding idea is going through a resurgence.”

123Print Launches “Younique” Wedding Contest and Free Personalized Wedding Samples

FREDERICK, Md., March 20, 2012 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ –
Custom printing provider, 123Print, today announced two initiatives to help engaged couples further personalize their wedding experiences. The first initiative, a contest, offers a free design consultation, “younique” wedding invitation design and up to $250 in free wedding invitations and complementary products (a $1,850 value). The second is free personalized wedding invitation samples.

The Younique Wedding Sweepstakes is open until April 15, with entry details available online at 123Print.com/younique-wedding as well as on Facebook and Twitter.

123Print is the first and only major online wedding stationery site to allow customers to personalize their free wedding invitation samples. Anita Brady, 123Print president explained, “As of today, any 123Print customer can select up to three wedding designs, personalize those designs and have two samples of each shipped for free. This no-cost solution allows engaged couples to see and feel the real invitation before making the purchase.”

Many wedding invitation companies offer free, generic samples. Some offer printed “proofs” on large orders for an additional charge. Only 123Print simplifies the process, making it completely free to order up to three personalized wedding invitation designs.

“We have always had a 100% satisfaction guarantee, standing behind the physical quality of each order, but that still left brides wondering if they were really going to like the in-their-hand look and feel of the wedding invitation. We eliminated that concern with free personalized wedding samples. Brides in the pilot program said they had more peace of mind after seeing their invitation in living color. We’re just thrilled that we can remove at least some of the stress that comes with planning a wedding,” Brady added.

7 Tips to Saving Time & Money Planning Your Wedding While Being Inspired

Bahamas Bridal show

There is no question that planning a wedding can be a daunting task for most brides but it does not have to be and one of the quickest and easiest ways to simplify your wedding planning is to attend a bridal show.

I can hear you saying it now, “bridal show?”  Yes a bridal show, and what makes a bridal show so great for wedding planning is that it not only gives you the opportunity to see the latest wedding trends and fashions, but it also allows you to interact with wedding vendors and brides as well.

So you get to see what wedding planners, floral designers, photographers, caterers, hair stylist, nail designers, beauty and day spas, wedding cake dessert designers and others in the wedding industry have to offer.

You also get to see them at their best, allowing you to really evaluate products, prices and services, all in a matter of hours, with the added benefits of possibly getting a special discount or winning one of the many prizes that are usually offered at these events.

If you are planning a wedding, the good news is that you won’t have to wait much longer or even look very far to find a bridal show as the annual

Bahamas Bridal Show will soon be here.

So here are 7 insider tips to saving time and money planning your wedding,  while being inspired having fun at the Bahamas Bridal Show.

1. Know your Budget

The key to successfully planning a wedding is knowing just how much money you have available to spend. So be sure and set your wedding budget before attending the bridal show. This will allow you to see whether or not your budget is reasonable and exactly what can be accomplished for the dollars you have allocated.

2. Decide Why you are there

You want to ensure that you know your goal for attending the bridal show. Is it just to collect information, get ideas or to do some real wedding planning. Knowing why you are there will certainly help you maximize your time at this event.

3. Bring your fiancé along with you.

A bridal show is not just for brides, like the wedding its about both of you, so be sure and bring your fiance along and really make your wedding planning about you – the couple!

You will also find sharing this time together is an incredible and rewarding bonding experience not only for your wedding planning but your marriage.

4. Be Sure Register

The biggest mistake you can make when attending a bridal show is to not register.  Yes your information will most likely be shared with all of the participating vendors but this is standard practice and nothing to shy away from, as it is one of the benefits vendors get for participating – the ability to follow up with you after the show.

But most importantly, by registering you become eligible to win the numerous prizes and get special discounts that will be offered at the bridal show. So be  sure and register.

5. Bring Completed information Labels

I know it sounds strange but don’t miss this as it is not only a time saver but a strategic step as well.  Almost all of the participating vendors at the bridal show will likely have drawings for prizes and giveaways and each will require you to complete a form.

So bring along your own completed, self-adhesive labels with all of your information on them including your name, address, phone number, cell number, email, and the date of your wedding.

Just think of how much time it will save you not having to complete those forms.  This simple strategic step will allow you to not only enter more drawings and increase your chance of winning, but also allows you time to experience more of what is happening at the bridal show.

6. Bring your purse along

While its easy to only concentrate on the many giveaways that will be offered during a bridal show, you want to make sure that you are prepared for any special offers that maybe available as well. So be sure to bring along your purse with your checkbook and credit cards, just in case you have the opportunity to actually book a vendor or hold a date with a deposit.

Also, be sure and read carefully the fine print and refund policies on any contract or document you may sign prior to making your deposit.

7. Get There Early

There is no question that bridal shows are crowded events, so be sure you get there as early as possible especially for the fashion show where seating can be limited.  You want to be seated for the fashion show at an hour prior to starting time so that you can get a good seat.

Finally once the

Bahamas Bridal Show is done, be sure and review the information that you have collected so that you can make any decisions that need to be made as quickly as possible. You would not want to miss out on opportunities because you waited too long to contact a vendor.

Nightlife Agenda: ‘Mad Men,’ Tiesto and the Wedding Present

DJ Tiesto , who headlined a dance party at the D.C. Armory last year, performs at the intimate Josephine lounge on Monday night. (2011 photo by Evy Mages for The Washington Post)
Every Tuesday, the Going Out Gurus highlight the week’s best DJs, bands, dance nights and parties. Here are five you can’t miss:

Tuesday:
The Wedding Present
’s David Gedge has a lifetime supply of bitterness and regret. “He’s got you back and that’s all he wants / A lot more than I’m left with,” he sang on “Dalliance,” a standout from the band’s cult classic 1991 album, “Seamonsters.” “I hope he’s really the one / Who will make all your dreams come true,” he offers on “You Jane,” from the brand new “Valentina.” Still hung up, huh? Not that we’re complaining, since this misfortune has led to one of the best rock songbooks of the past few decades. “Seamonsters” is the catalogue standout, a blistering collection on which the guitars are as stormy as Gedge’s relationships. At the Rock Roll Hotel, the band will perform that album in full, as well as songs from “Valentina.” It will be a great show, if not exactly the greatest date night.

Wednesday: For some people, the weekend doesn’t begin with Friday happy hour — it officially arrives when
DJ Annie Mac
kicks off her Friday evening show on the BBC’s Radio 1 (from 3 to 5 p.m. EDT). Every week, Annie and guests deliver a blistering blend that defies genres: Her take on bleeding-edge dance music takes in dubstep, electro, electro-funk, electro-house, drum’n’bass — anything she thinks you should be listening to (she’s usually right). Off the air, Annie Mac organizes tours of up-and-coming DJs under the banner of “Annie Mac Presents” and releases an annual CD compilation under the same name. But Annie Mac is more than a frontwoman; she’s one heck of a DJ, as she proved on a sonically adventurous visit to U Street Music Hall back in 2010. She returns this week for another go, and if you love dance music, you’d be a fool to miss it.

Sunday: Jean-Michel Basquiat left a blazing imprint on the art world over a few short years in the 1980s, jumping from street art to fine art and fueling a downtown Manhattan creative scene that is still dissected and mined for inspiration. He was also involved in music, forming the band Gray with artist Michael Holman. Reformed in 2010 with DJ and composer Nicholas Taylor, Gray revisited their art-noise sound and will be performing selections from the group’s 2010 album, “Shades Of . . . ,” at the Corcoran, along with tracks never publicly unveiled.

Sunday: After the Don-proposes-to-Megan bombshell at the end of last season’s “Mad Men,” fans are looking forward to Sunday’s two-hour premiere of Season 5. There are plenty of ways to celebrate the show’s return. Bourbon Steak’s swanky soiree features a cocktail reception with classic ’60s drinks, a three-course meal with such retro dishes as Swedish meatballs and Beef Wellington, and an episode viewing in the Four Seasons’ private dining room. Prizes will be awarded for the best ’60s fashions. The $75 ticket includes food and drinks.

For something more low-key, the “Mad Men” viewing party at Lounge 201 combines ’60s costume and trivia contests, retro cocktails, a chance to rewatch the final two episodes of Season 4 (just in case you need to be reminded of what happened), the show on numerous TVs, and a swag bag. General admission is $10, but two open-bar packages are available: Get unlimited rail drinks from 7 to 9 p.m. for $20, or upgrade to name brands for $30.

Monday:
Tiesto
is arguably the biggest DJ in the world, the kind who spins house and electronic dance music in front of sold-out crowds at Los Angeles’ Home Depot Center (26,000 capacity) and even larger crowds in European soccer stadiums. He’s in town to play at Glow on Tuesday, but first, he’ll spin at the waaaaay more intimate Josephine lounge Sunday and Monday nights, where capacity is only a few hundred. Sunday is beyond sold out, but there will be 50 to 100 tickets available at the door Monday night on a first-come, first-served basis. (Doors open at 9 p.m.; Tiesto is scheduled to go on about midnight.) If you want to see one of the greats up close and personal, this is the night to do it.

Need more ideas? There are an extra eight after the jump.

Tuesday, March 20

With the cocktail world’s attention on small-batch whiskeys and craft gins, vodka seems to have fallen off the radar. The Museum of the American Cocktail will right this wrong with a talk on
Classic Vodka Cocktails
at the Warehouse Theatre, exploring the history of the spirit from Russia to the present day and offering samples of six classic cocktails, including the Vesper and the Caipiroska. All-inclusive tickets are $45 in advance and $50 at the door.

Thursday, March 22

Warm weather doesn’t just mean that you get to enjoy drinks on a bar’s patio after work; it heralds the return of pup-friendly “yappy hours.” Bring your four-legged friend to the Washington Animal Rescue League’s fundraising happy hour on the Blue Banana’s back patio, where 20 percent of sales will be donated to the WARL shelter. Happy hour deals include $4 beers — draft, bottled and canned — and mixed drinks all night.

Friday, March 23

If you haven’t made it over to America Eats Tavern for its $1 oyster happy hour, here’s some extra motivation: Jose Andres’s restaurant is teaming up with Frederick’s Flying Dog brewery for a special
Friday happy hour
. The usual deals — $1 oysters, $4 draft beers, $6 wines and an $8 punch — run from 4 to 7 p.m. instead of the usual 4 to 6, and Flying Dog beers will be served on draft, in bottles and from a special cask for $5 all night long.

Charlottesville Americana-rockers Sons of Bill have a new album, “Sirens,” out next week and are celebrating with a free show at
Iota
. A free show at Iota on a Friday is a rarity and an idea we can get behind.

There was a time when
Fatboy Slim
’s big beats were inescapable in advertising an sports arenas. That time is 1997 to present day. Fatboy was headlining raves when Skrillex was dubstepping in diapers, and he hits the 9:30 Club armed with a few decades worth of dance music to choose from.

Sunday, March 25

While you’re out dining, imbibing and partying around town, you probably don’t stop to think about the bartenders, servers and busboys making your nights possible until it’s time to leave a tip. But trust us, they’re thinking about you. And more than a few times, your actions cross over into the realm of epic antics that anyone in the service industry can recount in droves. SpeakeasyDC has assembled performers with the best of these stories about entitled customers, co-workers and bosses for a special night called “At Your Service” at the Dunes.

Monday, March 26

Sonnymoon made a splash in D.C. at a couple of intimate house concerts before its downtempo indie-tronica took off to wider acclaim. The group is joined at DC9 on a current East Coast jaunt by stylistic peers Teebs and Time Wharp.

The
Joy Formidable
has a sound big enough for arenas (check the rave reviews for its opening slot on Foo Fighters’ fall tour), so be prepared for the 9:30 Club to shake when the Welsh trio performs there. Arrive early and bring earplugs for noisy shoegazers A Place to Bury Strangers.

Liverpool FC themed wedding for bride and groom in Singapore

A couple of Liverpool FC mad football fans from Singapore decided to base their entire wedding theme on their shared love for the British football club have become an internet sensation after a video of their big day was posted online.

Despite the fact that Henrt Han and Eileen Siaw live over 6,000 miles away from Liverpool, the couple’s dedication to their beloved Liverpool FC couldn’t be stronger.

According to the newlyweds, the football team played a special role in bringing them together as they first met at a LFC Supporters Club in Singapore in 2001. Aptly enough for a pair of football crazy fans, Henrt and Eileen’s first date was to watch a Liverpool match, albeit on TV. With Liverpool FC playing such a significant part in their relationship, it only seemed right to incorporate the club in their plans for the big day.

The bride walked down the aisle at the Regent’s Hotel in Singapore to the sounds of the classic Liverpool FC supporter’s song, You’ll Never Walk Alone, with the bride and groom exchanging vows on a stage decorated with replica European Cup/ UEFA Champions League trophies to commemorate the fact that Liverpool FC have won the title five times. Even the wedding guests got involved in the theme, waving Liverpool FC scarves as the couple made their way back down the aisle as man and wife.

Henrt and Eileen got married on February 25th but delayed their honeymoon until next month when they plan to fly to the UK to see their beloved Liverpool FC play at Fulham.
