Idea to Aggregate Multitude of Photos at Collective Events Leads to Start of …

Ideas for starting a business are often in plain sight when people examine a problematic issue in need of a solution. For example, the proliferation of new technology brings both benefits and unintended consequences. Photography is an obvious case.

Today’s technology permits numerous people to easily take pictures at the same event and post them online. The result is uploaded photos of common appeal on disconnected  Facebook pages. Pictures of a shared event – such as a wedding or family reunion – are posted in various locations. No one sees the entire collection of images.

New York photo company Kaptur aims to resolve this situation. The company’s application collects all the digital images taken at a single event by multiple individuals that are uploaded to Facebook. A user of Kaptur sees all of the related photos and permanently retains them.

The company’s president got the idea for Kaptur after finding that pictures of his own wedding were scattered across Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, and YouTube. An algorithm was developed with Kaptur’s eventual chief technology officer to search Facebook for pictures of the wedding.

Eventually, the two entrepreneurs converted their idea into a business. Kaptur is a Facebook app that uses album names, photo captions, and people tags to gather related pictures. When users click on their own pictures, the Kaptur application searches for similar photos and videos to create a custom album for editing and sharing.

Competitors of Kaptur have similar platforms for collecting pictures and creating group albums. But these rivals are a little different than the Kaptur service by their mechanisms for uploading and sharing photos.

Kaptur was launched in 2011 and recently raised its first $2,000,000 from angel investors in early 2012. The company intends to use the funds for marketing its concept to the wedding industry and developing a mobile application.

Online Wedding Planning Services Startup Myshaadi.in Raises First Round Of …

Myshaadi.in, an online portal that offers wedding related services, has raised its first round of funding from Indian Angel Network (IAN). The investors include active angel investors Rajan Anandan, Sunil Kalra, Ashim Mehra and Rehan Yar Khan. The financials details of the deal were not disclosed but Rehan Yar Khan will join the board of directors of Myshaadi.in.

Founded by Abhishek Jain, Myshaadi.in offers a host of wedding related services like personalised wedding sites, wedding event planning, budget calculator, shopping list, to do list, etc. The website also has a blogging section that talks about the latest trends and international concepts of wedding.

The site was launched in February 2011 and the company claims to have served more than 13,000 couples since then. Its target is to serve 1 lakh couples by the end of 2012.

“The fund will help us to strengthen operation and further improve our suite of services,” said Jain. A B Tech graduate from NIT Jaipur, prior to starting MyShaadi, Jain was working with IBM GBSC, India.

Rajan Anandan said, “What caught our attention towards Myshaadi.in was that there was hardly any significant and focused player in the matrimony domain who offered a gamut of matrimony services catering to Indian audience. With wedding industry being the fourth largest contributor to India’s GDP, Myshaadi.in is certainly in a very lucrative space.”

Unlike regular matrimonial and match-making sites like Bharatmatrimony.com, Shaadi.com and Vivaah.com, etc. that focus on getting people married, Myshaadi’s focus lies in the actual process of marriage and it provides wedding planning services for the same.

The site also allows its users to create free or paid wedding websites. While the validity of the free website (Silver plan) is only 3 months, the paid website (Gold plan for Rs 1,000 and Platinum for Rs 2,000) is valid for a year. Apart from the validity, paid websites also offers features like music, SMS reminders, photo importer and custom domain (only offered in the Platinum plan), among others. There is also an option of creating a Titanium website, but according to Myshaadi.in, that is available for “selected high-profile wedding clients only”.

Myshaadi’s direct competitors in the space are FirstPhera, WebVivah and Invity, among others. According to the company, the USP of the site is its simplicity, the ethnicity of designs and the fact that they are ad-free, among others.

Although the company wants to become a one stop solution for people getting married in India (Including NRIs), the fact that it is a late entrant to the wedding planning business means that its success and scale up plans would depend on execution and service differentiators.

The 20-Something Bridesmaid: What to expect when you’re expecting a wedding

Keep your friendship afloat. In the movie Bridesmaids, Annie worries that she won’t be sharing wine-and-magazine nights with bride-to-be Lillian for much longer. You, too, may be afraid that your relationship with your friend is going to change, but keep in mind that she’s the same person she’s always been, only she’s dealing with new — and, thankfully, temporary — stresses.

When you consider all of the wedding industry spam emails, family matters, financial strains, and mental and emotional aspects of preparing for a marriage, plus holding down a job and having time to, eat, sleep, and possibly relax occasionally, it’s not surprising that some brides don’t seem like their usual selves while they’re planning their wedding. So if you and your engaged friend once gawked at the outlandish price and pageantry of Kim Kardashian’s wedding, yet she now finds some of the style inspirational, just try to shrug it off.

Be extra supportive. Offering emotional support will be your primary bridesmaid responsibility, and the easiest way to do so is to carry on with your friendship as usual (new Kardashian-mania and all). If you normally enjoy cocktail hours or TV marathons with the bride-to-be, continue your traditions. Wedding talk will creep into discussions that once centered around other interests, but that’s OK.

“Nothing in [my] relationship [with the bride-to-be] has changed since the engagement,” said Meredith Blake, a first-time bridesmaid who will be part of her friends’/roommates’ August wedding. If anything, she and fellow bridesmaid Diana Kim said that they’ve found that the wedding-planning activities have helped strengthen that bond. “Diana had us go out to brunch a couple months ago so we could look at this notebook she has that’s filled with ideas and plans for the wedding,” Blake said.

Speak up when it matters, and play it cool when it doesn’t. Just like you did before, you should give your friend your honest opinion — but be mindful of all the stress she’s under. When the bride-to-be is searching for her dream dress, don’t be a snarky entourage from TLC’s Say Yes to the Dress just because the style isn’t what you’d pick for her. But if she’s dead-set on a venue that’s way out of her budget, by all means, step in and offer some money-saving alternatives. Above all else, remember that her planning process is not the time to plan your wedding, so don’t force your ideas down her throat.

“I definitely wanted to help out because I knew [the bride-to-be] was busy with work, and I have wedding websites bookmarked,” said Kim, a second-time bridesmaid with a professed love for wedding photography and styling. “I would come across some little thing that might be cute and would pin it on Pinterest for her to see. I’m trying not to overstep my boundaries by not bombarding her [with too much information].”

Consider your own budget carefully. When your personal finances are involved, however, it’s definitely OK to voice your opinion. If, like Annie in Bridesmaids, you can’t afford to go to Las Vegas for a bachelorette party, just say so. If buying a designer bridesmaid dress cuts into your grocery budget for a few months, choose food. A true friend will understand that you can’t use your life savings on her big day. (Making sure the other bridesmaids are on the same page is another story.)

Weddings are not a democracy — but you still have to be diplomatic. Whether there are two bridesmaids or 10, you’re going to have to socialize and plan with people who have different personalities, opinions, and budgets. Whether the other “ladies-in-waiting” are close friends of yours or complete strangers, tread carefully.

“On TV and in movies, there’s always an overbearing maid of honor and this group of friends who are falling all over each other with differing opinions and agendas,” said Blake. “[The bridesmaids I'm with] are so far away from any of the stereotypes purported by the media that it makes me second guess myself sometimes.”

You may feel that one woman is usurping your role as BFF, as Annie felt about Helen. But the Helen-like, take-charge bridesmaid in the group may just think she’s following her party-planner instincts. Everyone butts heads from time to time, but you’re all adults now, remember? Keep in mind the advice of actress Shiri Appleby: “Together, you are the team that is responsible for setting the tone of your bride’s experience. Deep down, you all want your best friend to have the best wedding day ever, so do what you can to get along and give the bride one less thing to worry about.”

If you’ve been in a wedding party, what advice would you give to bridesmaids?

Wedding Shows And Bridal Hops

Why attend a bridal show you may ask? You as a couple should attend because of all the exhibitors that will be available to you in one or many places you visit at the Wedding Show or Bridal Hop/Tour. Many wedding planners are available to help with every detail of your wedding planning.

Maybe you come in with just the colors you want, theme of the wedding or just come in to see what it’s all about with no plans laid down at all. Getting to talk to florists, disc jockeys, photographers, cake makers and caterers are available among many other vendors with samples of their work. At the Wedding Hops and Bridal Tours you will get to visit several places that didn’t even come to mind as a place to have your ceremony or reception. (Many of the places can be used for your wedding parties as well. The bachelor party, bachelorette party, wedding shower as well as the rehearsal dinner place of your choice). By the time you leave, a lot of finalized plans can be done.

Fashion shows are usually given with the latest trends which really helps couples decide on dresses, bridesmaids dresses and even tuxedos for the groom and groomsmen.

Things to bring with you:

  • A support group – come as a couple, bring family or wedding party members who can cover more area, get information for you or help you with wedding planning.
  • Checkbook because some vendors give big discounts at the wedding shows and hops/tours.
  • Calendar because you may want to set the date or dates with vendors (their calendars fill quickly, especially during the wedding season months).
  • Hearty appetite because of all the cake makers and caterers bring plenty of food for you to sample.
  • Business cards with names and phone numbers to keep from having to write and rewrite all those prize entry slips.
  • Comfortable shoes because the shows will take awhile to get through and standing around watching the fashion shows or visiting several places on a hop/tour can be hard on your feet after the event is over.
  • Next upcoming event:

    Thursday, April 26, 2012
    Millennium Center Spring Wedding Show
    Millennium Center
    101 West 5th Street
    Winston-Salem
    5pm-9pm
    336-723-3700

    Millennium Center

Signing up for the shows ahead of time on their websites can save a lot of money plus let the hops/tours prepare for a head count for their transportation needs. On the hops/tours you can receive gift bags so this number is important.

    Helpful wedding planning hints

    Do your homework

Research the climate, look for alternate locations in case of bad weather and figure out regulations early so you won’t be surprised as the wedding date draws near.

Work with those in the know

When planning a beach wedding, there are many things to consider. Choose a planner who specializes in beach weddings and can help you navigate the requirements and pick local vendors.

    Get it in writing

Confirm all agreements in writing before any bills are paid. The stress of finding a new photographer or caterer because the agreement wasn’t in writing is not how you’ll want to spend your day.

    Remember finishing touches

While making sure everything goes smoothly is important, it’s how great you looked on your special day that you’ll really want to hear about. Make sure your stylist can find a look that will work in hot or humid weather, and don’t forget the sunscreen.

    Delegate

Asking and accepting help from anyone who offers isn’t a bad thing, just make sure the person is someone whose judgment you trust. Giving people tasks on the big day will ensure you’re able to enjoy it.

Third Friday takes on comic book theme April 20

SALISBURY — The city’s Third Friday is set to flood the downtown area with a full evening of arts and entertainment on Friday, April 20.

The monthly event is an all-volunteer effort, a downtown economic development initiative and a project of the Salisbury Arts and Entertainment District Committee.

“Third Fridays are produced by a small group of volunteers who love the arts and our downtown area,” said Third Fridays coordinator Jamie Heater. “We are united in the potential we see in our downtown area and in the talent and creativity of our local population. We believe that Salisbury can and should be a cultural and artistic hub on the Shore and choose our beautiful downtown area to be focal point for this to occur. We hope that Third Fridays can be a springboard, a jumping off point, not only for local artists and musicians to collaborate, but also for the community and the downtown area.”

This month, the Third Friday team is celebrating all things geektastic with Salisbury’s first Comicon. Graphic storytelling will be on display, with many illustrators and animators set to collaborate with area organizations and artists.

Local group Interesting Monsters will be playing live on the Plaza, and guests are encouraged to come in costume as their favorite comic book character.

Local comic book publisher PLB Comics will be on hand, and featured artist Douglas E. Draper Jr. will be displaying artwork in the Powell Building.

The Government Office Building lawn will host a children’s fun area with games and activities hosted by Camp Odyssey, along with the US FIRST Robotics Team 3389, which will have several small robots available for demonstrations and interactions along with a large robot on display. FIRST stands for For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology.

The Art Institute Gallery’s 2012 Photography Exhibition and Digital Art Invitational will open, and the Ocean Pines Photography Club will hold a solo exhibit in the Foyer Gallery. Remedy Church will also feature live music from The Larks on the third floor of the City Center building.

Several other artisans and crafters will have displays open, and downtown shops and restaurants have scheduled special sales.

“Third Fridays is now in its third year, and is poised to deliver the best summer (Third Fridays has) ever seen,” Heater said. “It is free for local artists to set up, and for the public to attend.

“The best way to support Third Friday is to come down. Take a stroll in your beautiful downtown, visit the businesses that are here, talk to the artists in your community, get plugged in. It’s a great time.”
