Eco Wedding: Cool Decor From Reclaimed Barn Wood

Spring is the season of wedding planning, and couples facing a tight budget are always looking for creative ways to achieve elegance without a big price tag. In addition to saving money, many are looking for ways to reduce the overall environmental impact of their nuptials. This quest for eco-thriftiness leads many to seek out DIY or recycled accents for their special day.

While some green wedding decor can leave something to be desired, the shabby-chic products offered by the Rustic Wedding Shop are picture perfect. Made from reclaimed barn wood, as well as burlap and other vintage materials, the Etsy shop’s selection of pastoral products are sure to put a smile on the face of any eco-conscious bride and groom.

Created by an artist in Ontario, the shop’s handmade pieces include rustic wooden hearts hewn with care from a lovely 130 year old salvaged barn board (pictured above), table number stands, and an all-natural spalted maple wood dessert stand (pictured below). The cake stand has a rustic live edge, is sanded to perfection, and protected with a low-voc food safe matte finish.

According to a recent shop announcement, new pieces including unique cake toppers, banners, and charming barn board centerpieces, will be added soon. ”We love all things natural and rustic, and have created this shop to bring something magical to your wedding celebration,” writes the shop owner.

Earth Day Report – An Engineer, Tweens & Recycling

Earth Day has been extra special for me for the last 17 years… it’s my wedding anniversary! And, I married an Environmental Engineer – yes, you read correctly! When I saw April 22nd available as a Saturday wedding date back in 1995, I just knew it would be special for years to come. But even before then I was an environmental nut. Our friends and family can attest to how many of them I have FORCED to get recycle bins for their homes. They’ll also tell you how many parties I’ve left with bags full of recycling they wouldn’t collect. Since my twins were about 3, I had them separating ‘bottles and paper’ into different trash cans. Try NOT recycling in front of them now that they’re 10 and see the reaction! These days the lessons are about more than recycling, it’s about making responsible earth conscience decisions. We try walking as much as we can to the grocery store to pick up small items. We have worked on reducing our water consumption – a difficult lesson to grasp for tweens who love their bath time. I go everywhere with my reusable cloth bags and you can hear the phrase “turn off the lights” nightly in our home.

I must say that the message is getting heard more loudly than ever across our Latino and multicultural communities as well. In their later years, my Abuelos started recycling, separating trash and saving the newspaper to share with others so it wouldn’t be wasted. But I believe we still have so much to learn and do. Our mission at Los Tweens Teens is helping our chicos prepare for the Teen years and to do so, we suggest nosotros, los padres, the parents – get involved. SHOW THEM why making responsible choices matter. Ayudalos entender! Help them understand that every little effort helps.

Here are some of our young Latina Tween bloggers sharing what they’ve been doing to help the earth and asking other kids- what are YOU doing this Earth Day and beyond?

We invite you and your chicos to share your ideas and actions. Together we can continue improving our world – Juntos podemos seguir mejorando nuestro mundo.

Abrazos!

Asheville’s Rob Neufeld on a new book by Julia Alvarez, ‘A Wedding in Haiti’ – Asheville Citizen

<!–Saxotech Paragraph Count: 14
–>

On the road

The first half of “A Wedding in Haiti” relates the sometimes comical, often moving adventures of a ragtag group of Dominicans and Haitians navigating checkpoints and potholes in Bill’s Ford pickup. It’s 2009; Haitians are treated like aliens by ruling Dominicans.

As the section closes, Alvarez says, “When we have seen a thing, we have to tell the story.” Her new familiarity with Haitian life has been a soaking.

Coming home, she finds it is a different place, not because it has changed, but because she sees it differently. Her deferential watchman, Don Ramón — he’s a former soldier. Her guide on her Haiti trip, Homero — he’ll go home and tell a private version of their story.

“One thing is certain,” she wraps up. “Like the Ancient Mariner, we will feel compelled to tell the story, over and over. As a way to understand what happened to us.”

Two-part mirror

“A Wedding in Haiti” is a memoir with the structure and impact of a novel.

The story that Alvarez tells in Part Two picks up a year later, after the earthquake of 2010 has devastated Haiti. A trip back to Piti’s region is necessary, and Bill wants to stop in Port-au-Prince to help.

Alvarez puts reflection aside, except for a brief account of Haiti’s riches-to-rags history, and kicks into another adventure trip — the facing side of her mirror into Haitian society.

Interactions with a convenience store proprietress; Esseline’s godmother; an impromptu tour guide through a flash flood; cool Charlie who has come a-courting; Piti’s mother; and Esseline’s younger sisters follow.

One sister produces a school notebook that her elder sister, Lanessa, has filled with exercises — “a catechism,” Alvarez writes “of what a young person should know.”

It comes in the form of lists: “symptoms of AIDS” and “three ways to prevent getting AIDS”; “the great countries of the world,” including West Germany, “which hasn’t existed since 1991”; the great problems of the world,” and a prompt to name solutions for each one.

“Not surprisingly, the pages after this last question are blank,” Alvarez notes.

She applies the lesson to her own late-life education. After a frightening encounter with a violent gang at a flooded part of the road, she thinks about “the great problems of the world,” including and especially, “the inequitable distribution of goods.”

Heart of generousness

Alvarez’s theme — how following the heart leads one across boundaries and plunges one in politics, personal and national — has infused many great books: Nadine Gordimer’s “My Son’s Story” (South Africa); Olive Tilford Dargan’s “Call Home the Heart” (Southern Appalachia); Graham Greene’s “The Power and the Glory” (Mexico); and others.

“A Wedding in Haiti” joins that list. It is hopeful, folksy, sobering and graceful with good story-telling.

The Ring, The Gown & The Wedding: Inside Brad Pitt & Angelina Jolie’s Engagement

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie

It’s official! PEOPLE has the inside scoop on Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie‘s surprise engagement – from her diamond ring to what the kids think about Mom and Dad tying the knot. After seven years and six kids together, Pitt secretly brought his own design for the ring to Beverly Hills-based jeweler Robert Procop. “Brad had the vision, he had the design, and we collaborated to fabricate it together,” Procop tells PEOPLE. When asked if he was surprised when Brad told him the big news, Procop says coyly, “I’m never surprised at anyone.”

The engagement ring, which Procop says is made with a diamond from a non-conflict area, was the most top-secret project of all. He won’t confirm the custom-cut jewel’s size or price but, says jeweler Neil Lane, “The ring looks like a beautiful classic large diamond with an art deco feel. Brad’s sense of aesthetics is amazing, and knowing Angelina and what an elegant, beautiful woman and style icon she is, it only makes sense that he’d design for her one of the most beautiful rings in the world. They are an amazing, loving couple.” An independent expert says the ring could weigh in at a total of about 10 carats and cost about $1 million.

Before April 13, when Jolie and Pitt publicly confirmed the engagement at a private viewing at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art’s Chinese galleries, only a select few knew about it – and the duo spent the day at home together in L.A., savoring the moment until their kids returned from school in the afternoon. No one, of course, is more thrilled than the pair’s boisterous – and increasingly vocal – brood, who had been urging Mom and Dad to puhleeeeze get married already.

It’s a pretty traditional move for a pair who live by their own rules. Insiders who have spent time with them say that the family have settled into a genuine comfort zone as they emerge from the foggy infant-rearing years. “They’ve reached a stage where their family has jelled,” says a source who has visited with the pair in France. “Their children are all of a certain age now, and they feel a stability. They can breathe a little as a couple.”

PEOPLE asked fashion heavyweights Reem Acra and Monique Lhuillier how they’d dress this A-list bride. Acra envisions a body-skimming ivory satin gown, while Lhuillier sees a “Chantilly lace gown with a beautiful V-neckline, low back and a high slit,” she says. “Angie has style. She takes a classic look and adds a sultry, sexy edge and makes it her own.”

Construction at the couple’s sprawling Château Miraval in France has ignited rumors about a wedding there – though locals say the addition looks more like a wine cellar than a chapel. Of course, the spot offers privacy – as does their L.A. compound. They also have strong ties to New Orleans, where they own a home, and their kids’ birthplaces, including Cambodia, Ethiopia and Vietnam. As for when we can expect a wedding, Pitt’s rep says, “There is no date set at this time,” but the couple will be busy with work in the next few months. Besides, for now they are content to bask in their new betrothal. “They really do have a magnetism together,” says a source. Adds another, “Brad and Angie realized long ago that for their family to work, they need to stick together as a team.” No matter what style it takes, their wedding “will be a fun ceremony and party that the kids can be a part of,” says the L.A. insider.

Plan a first-class buffet for your wedding

You spent lakhs on the wedding and all people remember is the palak paneer. Here’s how to make the food a hit.

Most people fantasise about their weddings in great detail, slowly filling up each empty slot with the perfect location, the perfect dress, and the perfect partner. And while you may try to do your best, some things inevitably go wrong. The guests could arrive late, or the bride could trip on her dress. But as Suresh Thampy, executive chef at Courtyard by Marriot, puts it, everything can be salvaged if the buffet is just right. “Agreeing on the wedding menu is one of the most important steps in a new relationship,” says Thampy. “It is the first time that two families, with very different tastes, come together and reach a compromise.” If this happens peacefully, the couple doesn’t have too much else to worry about.

He says couples normally start planning their wedding spreads around six months in advance.

The first step is to make sure there are dishes on the menu that both the bride and groom like. Chef recommends, very few ingredients should be repeated and colours should be given importance. The balanced buffet has a red tomatobased sauce, a green palak-based curry, and a white cashew or curdbased dish.

“Single cuisine buffets are passe,” he says, “especially since Mumbai has such a cosmopolitan crowd. Pasta counters, are a favourite at weddings, but it should always be made fresh.” He then lists a series of ingredients that must be served fresh, including (and especially) rotis or any Indian breads, dishes like Thai curry – or other coconut based items, and anything with corn flour. “Our tastes have evolved and shifted more towards oriental food such as Thai, Malaysian noodles and laksa soup.”

Live dosa and appam counters are great but these only work with smaller crowds, since queues become too long.

The trick with larger crowds is to open up multiple serving stations to avoid a pile up. Then comes the most exciting part – the dessert counter. Chocolate fountains, fruit salads and marshmallows have become almost as important as jalebi and gulab jamun counters. “Don’t scrimp on the desserts and assume everyone will be full,” says Thampy. Desserts are a bit pull he says. “This is a big reason people even come to weddings.” Bring in a souffle, mousse, dark chocolate, wine-flavoured and raspberry desserts and give the guests enough to chat about all night.

The course of the meal

Welcome drinks
1 fruit juice
1 ice-cream-based drink/milkshake
1 soda based drink

Starters
– Equal number of veg and non-veg, served for a span of 2 hours
– Open up the soups and salads counters, followed by all the live stations, roti counters, and dessert counters (Some traditions insist guests eat a bite of the dessert first). Keep them open for 3 hours.

Sajjan Ghot
Immediate family sits and eats together, with the bride and groom in the middle. Allocate about an hour for it.

Classic buffet goof-ups
– Pasta becomes soggy and begins to spoil if kept out for too long
– Rotis, naans must be made fresh (ideally use a portable tandoor)
– Coconut milk based curries, doesn’t work if left for long
– Fried starters or koftas become limp and need to be changed every 30-40 minutes
– Decide on hot or cooler food based on the weather (soup for winters, and sandwiches in summer)
– Make sure the ingredients you decide on are available and seasonal
– Don’t start cooking/serving starters till you know when the Baraat is coming in.

For a fun buffet
– Pick a theme for the wedding and decide the menu accordingly.
– There’s nothing like a chef who can toss romalis up in the air, or a bartender who juggles colourful drinks.
– Instead of serving food from one long table, set up counters with varied cuisines in different corners, each with a different theme.

Plan your wedding with the help of Pinterest, Etsy

Like everything else these days, more and more people are turning to the internet to plan their weddings. Honestly, who has time and money to buy wedding magazines and tab or cut out inspiration? After all, the content is mostly free, endless, and easy to access. Two websites in particular have revolutionized wedding planning – and neither are specifically wedding-oriented.

When my partner and I first got engaged, I’d talk about Pinterest and Etsy incessantly. For a while he thought I was talking nonsense, until we finally sat down and went through the sites together. Pinterest (www.pinterest.com), a virtual corkboard, and Etsy (www.etsy.com), an e-commerce site, have made planning and paying for your wedding much easier. Now he’s just as hooked as I am. Let’s take a look at the sites and the most efficient way to use them.

Most engaged couples create a wedding binder. The binder is often divided into two parts: wedspiration (wedding inspiration) and logistics (contracts and schedules). I recommend using Pinterest to essentially eliminate the need for a wedspiration section of your wedding binder. Your arms will be grateful for less weight, trees will be grateful for less paper, and your brain will be grateful for better organization.

With Pinterest, you create your own personal virtual corkboards of images and ideas. You can create unlimited boards, and even re-pin an item someone else put on their own board. This website is perfect for gathering all of those pictures from Google that inspired you. (You aren’t alone. We all use Google Image Search. It’s easy and convenient.) The best part of Pinterest is the ability to organize all of your wedspiration. Instead of investing in dividers, paper, and tabs, you can simply create separate boards for your different ideas. For example, when my partner and I started our account, we had a separate board for each segment of our wedding. We had a board for color inspiration, one for cake ideas, one for bridesmaid dresses, and yet another for decoration/theme ideas. When we started to make decisions, we combined the different pieces from each board into one concept board and deleted the clutter of what we didn’t need. And don’t forget, Pinterest isn’t just for your wedding. You can collect recipes, home décor inspiration, and even ideas for your registry.

Most new users are a little confused on how to get started, so let me break it down. First, sign up for Pinterest. You do this by requesting an invitation or having another user invite you. Once your account is created, you have the option of adding a Pin It button to your web browser. You’ll want to do this. Whenever you see an image you want to add, you click on the Pin It button and choose the board you want it assigned to. You also have the option of uploading pictures from your computer directly to your board. Similar to Twitter, Facebook, and Google+, you can follow other members, “Like” their pins, or “re-pin” an item. You can even follow specific boards from other members.

While Pinterest is revolutionizing how couples plan for and design their weddings, Etsy is creating a whole new realm for not only wedspiration, but actual acquisition of items many couples couldn’t access before.

Etsy is an e-commerce website that allows its users to post homemade and/or vintage items for sale. I’ve found that Etsy has three great purposes. First, it allows you to browse for ideas that will fit the theme of your wedding. In conjunction with Pinterest, this is an amazing tool. There are millions of ideas and images right at your fingertips. But logistically, Etsy provides two other functions.

Second, it allows you to purchase goods and services that you would have a hard time accessing in the past. Everything from jewelry, dresses, invitations, and calligraphy are available on Etsy. Trending items include personalized memorial candles and dress hangers. Often these items are at a lower price than if you were to commission them from a local artist. (And come on, who doesn’t like a good deal?) For example, it’s easy to find a handmade one-of-a-kind veil and fascinator on Etsy for as little as $75, when in a store you could pay up to $300 for a similar piece.

The third value of Etsy is for those of us who have a creative itch and love DIY projects. Etsy has an array of wholesale suppliers that have hard-to-get supplies (such as brooches for the newly popular brooch bouquet) for an extremely low cost. My partner and I chose to purchase handmade origami roses off Etsy wholesale to make our bouquets, boutonnieres, and corsages ourselves. The entire wedding party and family included, we were able to accommodate 28 people’s flower arrangements for under $300 and a little over three hours worth of work. To order these bouquets already made would have cost us a minimum of $900. As an added bonus, for the craftiest of couples, Etsy is a great way to get ideas on how to recreate your favorite items yourself. While it’s tempting to purchase the personalized dress hangars for $15 a piece, with a little time and patience you’ll find that most people can make the same design themselves for $5. A word of caution, as I’ve mentioned before, you have to weigh the financial cost of buying the item against the time and energy cost of making it. Again, only you and your partner know what you can handle.

Award-winning actress Carey Mulligan
and folk rock singer Marcus Mumford were married  yesterday – by the
groom’s father in a converted barn on a  working farm.

The
bride, 26, who won an Oscar nomination and a BAFTA for her role in An
Education, exchanged vows with the Mumford Sons frontman in a
rustic-themed ceremony in the middle of the Somerset countryside.

Marcus’s father John, a vicar, conducted the service inside a barn at Stream Farm in Bridgwater.

Eight bridesmaids attended Carey and were dressed in turquoise knee-length prom dresses with matching blue high-heels.

Among the 200 guests were actress Sienna Miller, Hollywood star Jake Gyllenhaal and Oscar-winner Colin Firth.

This isnt true… i was at the wedding and it was not here- dont quite know where this location came from…?

i dont like her.she`s not pretty and looks cheap.her family have no class.

Monty, his father is the pastor of a vineyard church which meets in a secondary school in Putney. Given the choice, I’d go for the barn too. Besides any decent vicar is probably aware that God is everywhere anyway.

To the doubters, I read some time ago that they knew each other as youngsters at church, so not as rushed as people think.Good luck to them!!

Carey has come so far since Doctor Who! Congratulations and good luck to both of them!!!

Wish I felt different because she seems like such a nice person. I just don’t see this working out. Looking for the divorce due to not spending enough time together article within the next year.

Civil War theme headlines Garden Week in Williamsburg

In Williamsburg, this year’s Historic Garden Week in Virginia tour on April 24 commemorates the 150th anniversary of America’s Civil War.

You can tour the Palmer House, temporary headquarters of Union Gen. George McClellan who wrote to his wife of its “lovely gardens and conservatory,” as well as Bassett Hall, where a young Union Lt. George Armstrong Custer served as best man at the wedding of his West Point classmate and wounded Confederate officer. You can also see the President’s House at the College of William and Mary, a home with its own Civil War connections.

“All the properties in the colonial historic area and on the campus played significant roles before and after the May 5, 1862, Battle of Williamsburg,” says Terry Buntrock, tour chairman and a member of the Williamsburg Garden Club, which sponsors the event.

“In addition to the Civil War properties, the tour features contemporary homes in the neighborhood that borders Williamsburg’s new Arts District.”

Three properties you don’t want to miss, says Buntrock, include:

1) Bassett Hall, the former home of the John D. Rockefeller family, which has not been open for Garden Week since 1961. The Colonial Revival gardens were designed by Arthur Shurcliff as a place where the Rockefellers could actually do some gardening work themselves. The home and many outbuildings will be open.

2) Another “must see” would be the escorted or self-guided walking tour of important trees and gardens on the College of William and Mary campus. This is the first time in 79 years that the campus tour has been offered, and it will include The President’s Home and The Wren Building and Chapel. Important Civil War history will be discussed. Nancy Hugo, author of “Remarkable Trees of Virginia,” will be on hand to sign her book and answer questions about Williamsburg’s Heritage Trees, including the dawn redwoods on the campus.

3) The Hertzler Garden on College Terrace was in Better Homes and Gardens magazine in 2010 – read the 2010-published Daily Press story about the garden at http://www.roomandyard.com/diggin. The Hertzlers were inspired by the gardens at Colonial Williamsburg, and vegetables and flowers co-exist in the planting beds.

In addition, you can see the Steele home and garden, a chalet-style cottage built in 1920; it was one of the first homes constructed west of the William and Mary campus. Purchased in 2006 by its present owner, the house has been renovated and preserved. The original owner was a Colonial Williamsburg groundskeeper who planted boxwood, camellias, azaleas and crape myrtles that are still there.

Mattey’s Garden, a school garden dedicated in 1999 at Matthew Whale Elementary School on Scotland Street, will also be open. – Kathy Van Mullekom

Williamsburg tour

Historic Garden Week in Williamsburg is 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Tuesday, April 24. The full $30 ticket admits you to all eight properties and transportation on Colonial Williamsburg buses. Single-site admission is $15. Tickets can be purchased at the Colonial Williamsburg Visitor Center 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday, April 23, and 9 a.m.-noon Tuesday, April 24. Tickets can also be purchased online at http://www.VaGardenWeek.org; the Garden Club of Virginia sponsors Historic Garden Week in Virginia April 21-28.
