Marlo Thomas checks in with the globe-trotting, party-planning author and wedding expert to the stars.

If you could write a personal slogan that you live by, what would it be?
“Life is a gift.” I first heard this years ago on the show Judging Amy, and it stuck. No matter what is happening in your day, it’s a wonderful phrase to remember.

If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?
I’d be 6’2″. Standing on my toes for photos gets annoying!

What is your secret dream?
(See above.)

What is your greatest fear?
Being alone. I surround myself with incredible family and friends, and I can’t imagine not having them around.

Which words or phrases do you most overuse?
Well, my partner, Ryan, is quick to point out when I start repeating myself, so any overuse is short-lived. However, I have been known to say “Off the charts” one too many times.

Who is your personal hero?
My mom. She continues to amaze me with her strength and spirit.

What is always at your bedside? In your purse?
Sadly, the man-purse is a part of my life! And the worst part: reading glasses are now an essential.

What do you collect?
Watches — but I am always late!

What is your obsession?
I think I invented the term OCD, but I’m impatient, so my obsession changes daily. The only consistent obsession is my quad-venti cappuccinos from Starbucks.

Who or what always makes you laugh?
Ryan. He’s is always telling jokes and sees the positive in everything. No one can bring a bigger smile to my face.

What do you find sexy? What turns you on?
(See above.)

Which of the seven deadly sins is your favorite?
I don’t think any of them. (Confession: I had to Google it to find out what they were.)

What is always in your refrigerator?
Space.

When you’re watching TV, what makes you want to throw the remote at the screen?
Usually the remote — I’m electronically challenged!

What brings you peace?
Time off at my country house, doing nothing except walking, gardening and feeding my koi fish.

Which song or songs would make the perfect soundtrack for your life?
“Somewhere Over the Rainbow,” by [Hawaiian musician] Israel Kamakawiso’ole. It makes me smile every time

Who’s your favorite bad guy?
Everyone in True Blood — I’m obsessed!

What’s the most useless piece of advice you’ve ever received?
My grandfather told me years ago, “In business, never say no. Say yes, and then figure out how to make it happen.” I have followed that through my career and I’m exhausted!

If you were a stripper, what would you choose for your stage name?
Marlo Thomas :)

What do you remember most about your first kiss?

I plead the Fifth.

‘The Big Bang Theory’ Finale Preview: Wedding Fever is in the Air

The Big Bang Theory Launch Acceleration - H 2012

Wedding fever is in the air on CBS’ The Big Bang Theory as two couples each have matrimony on their mind during Thursday’s Season 5 finale.

‘The Big Bang Theory’s’ Out of This World Finale: EP Teases Funny, Emotional Wedding-Centric Episode‘The Big Bang Theory’: Anatomy of the 100th Episode (Exclusive)‘The Big Bang Theory’ Celebrates 100 Episodes

With NASA moving Howard’s (Simon Helberg) launch dangerously close to the formal wedding he and Bernadette’s (Melissa Rauch) have planned, Howard was tasked with going toe-to-toe with his bride-to-be’s tough-guy father and request that their pricey plans be postponed in order for him to head to the International Space Station.

After gaining Mr. Rostenkowski’s (Casey Sander) blessing in a heart-warming scene during the May 3 episode, Leonard, Sheldon, Penny, Amy and Raj now must find a way to make their friends official in this week’s fifth-season finale.

STORY: ‘The Big Bang Theory’s’ Out of This World Finale: EP Teases Funny, Wedding-Centric Episode

“All season there have been so many ups and downs with Bernadette and Howard as far as what any couple has to go through while they’re making these life decisions,” Rauch tells The Hollywood Reporter. “They are such compatible opposites but they always figure out a way to come to a resolution that works for both of them.”

Ultimately, Rauch teases, the nerdy lovebirds will try everything in their power to make their marriage official before Howard’s mission to space — but it won’t be easy. “They hit a lot of obstacles along the way, which may put actually tying the knot in jeopardy,” she warns. “They’ve always hit speed bumps along the way with navigating each other’s personalities — and Howard’s past as we found out in the bachelor party. So it’s only fitting that in trying to make it to the altar they hit a ton of obstacles along the way.”

With time at a premium before Howard’s mission, the couple will mull a few less-than-romantic ideas: heading to Las Vegas and a more reasonable jaunt to City Hall. “It’s definitely an effort along the way, and it’s symbolic of the fact that nothing has ever been easy between Bernadette and Howard and their relationship,” Rauch says. “They make a valiant effort in trying to do it.”

While the wedding planning is all systems go ahead of the launch, whether or not Howard will actually go through with the mission continues to remain a mystery as he continues to express his fears — and reaffirm that he’s an astronaut even if he doesn’t make into space.

Meanwhile, Leonard (Johnny Galecki) and Penny (Kaley Cuoco) will have their own unique brand of awkwardness going on after Leonard’s heat-of-passion marriage proposal. Although Penny declined his proposal — while still confirming that it didn’t mean splitsville for the duo — executive producer Bill Prady teases that the uneasiness between the two will continue into the finale.

The aftermath of what Leonard did, that kind of thing can’t be swept under the rug,” Prady says, noting that Leonard’s proposal echoes his early profession of love that went unreturned and led to the couple’s previous breakup. “They could come back from this, they could not come back from it. To me, it’s always been that they met each other at the wrong point relative to each other in their lives. It’s just a messy, rocky relationship. I think that there’s any possibility that they could say, ‘This is crazy, let’s just stop this.’ [Or] they could say, ‘Let’s push forward.’ “

STORY: ‘The Big Bang Theory’: From ‘Star Trek’ to ‘Lord of the Rings,’ the Show’s Nerdiest Moments

“They have very strong feelings for each other and their issues have to do with what they currently want in their lives right now,” Prady says. “I don’t think Penny wants to be married and Leonard is five years older than her.”

Rauch, meanwhile, remains hopeful for the show’s long-running couple, noting that they’ll never allow relationship issues to impact the group. “There is just some wedding fever in the air all around and I think it got the best of some of the other characters, Leonard in particular,” she says. “As much as we’ve seen them in their will-they-or-won’t-they relationship, they’ve always managed to still be able to hang out with their friends and not let their relationship affect the people around them.”

Do you think Howard and Bernadette will tie the knot? The Big Bang Theory Season 5 finale airs Thursday at 8 p.m. on CBS. Season 6 will premiere in the fall.

Uni Watch reader has NFL-themed wedding

Jimi Collins is a passionate Bills fan. The love of his life, Margot, is a passionate Patriots fan. So when they were planning their recent wedding, they decided to embrace the notion of their mixed NFL marriage.

The wedding had a strong NFL theme. The couple stood on a Pats/Bills mat while a minister dressed as a referee conducted the ceremony (all photos courtesy of Jimi Collins):

The newly married couple exited the ceremony to the sounds of a string quartet playing the “NFL on CBS” theme. Then everyone headed to the reception, where Collins wore a Cookie Gilchrist jersey, the ushers wore eye black, and guests were invited to wear jerseys:

In addition to the usual wedding food options, tailgate fare was also available, including hot dogs and beer. But the real treat was the wedding cake, which was filled with Bills and Pats iconography:

Hmmm, not sure about that cake topper. Is Margot being dragged to a Bills game? In any case, Collins says, “People told us it was the most fun they ever had at a wedding.”

Congrats to the happy couple, and here’s hoping we see more sports-themed weddings.

Los Angeles (CNN) — Born and raised in the Philippines to a businessman and a socialite model, Monique Lhuillier is today one of LA’s most celebrated fashion designers, with a clientele that includes Gwyneth Paltrow, Kristen Stewart, Reese Witherspoon, and Scarlett Johansson.

A graduate of LA’s Fashion Institute of Design Merchandising, Lhuillier began designing wedding gowns while shopping for one for herself. She launched her first bridal collection in 1996 and today, her atelier also produces ready-to-wear evening gowns, linens and tableware, fine paper and home fragrances.

Her dresses, which sell for $1,500 to $10,000, are stocked at Bergdorf Goodman, Neiman Marcus and Saks Fifth Avenue and, in a few months, she will open a flagship store — her third outlet — and a new showroom in New York City.

Lhuillier’s average day is spent convening with her design team, monitoring the progress of licensing deals and conducting fittings, overseeing PR and production, making visits to her LA flagship store and her factory. At night, after her two children are in bed, Lhuillier often attends functions too.

Here, she tells CNN about building a business from scratch, working with celebrities, and having a husband for a CEO.

On early ambition …

Ever since I was a little girl, I always loved fashion. I would watch my mother get dressed and suggest things she should wear. When my parents used to entertain, I would come out and perform after dinner with my little outfits that were cut up and restyled. I always thought I was going to be a dancer and then fashion kind of took over. Every young girl goes through that stage, but it didn’t stop. I would go and sketch with our local tailor in the Philippines.

On breaking into bridal as a bride …

When I looked at what was out there, I felt that there was a lack of fashionable options for young women so I said, ‘This is what I want to do: I want to start with wedding gowns’. I was 23 years old.

My husband [Tom] was like ‘it’s a phase.’ We got married and six months later I came up with a small line of wedding dresses — probably six of them. I went to a local trade show and had a little booth and showed my dresses and to my excitement and delight, five stores ordered pieces from me. We drove home and I realized that I actually had to make everything.

Building the Monique Lhuillier brand

On getting established …

The first year, people could barely say my name. They were like ‘Monique L … that Monique girl.’ Then after a year or three, they were saying ‘Monique Lu-yay’ and I was like, ‘Well, something’s happening.’

On her point of difference …

I had not worked for a storied house before, so I had to prove myself from the very beginning. I followed my gut and was always putting myself in the shoes of the ladies I was designing for. ‘Would I want to wear that? Would I feel special in that? Would that flatter my figure?’ Since we started in bridal, I really perfected the fit. I think, you know, that was the key to why so many women responded to it.

On making the old feel new …

I do three bridal collections a year, and what’s been helpful is that I do ready-to-wear in between, so when I approach bridal, I’m ready for whites and ivories again. Before, there was a point where I was like ‘I can’t do one more white wedding dress.’

I’m injecting new color. There’s blush: That’s so subtle, yet it’s a big commitment to go outside white and ivory. That’s a trend I’ve been pushing for the last two seasons and now brides are embracing it. Another trend I started five years ago was adding a sash and introducing color that way.

On designing for celebrities …

[It's a] platform for the world to see what my work looks like and they showcase it beautifully. They’re trendsetters and that’s such a positive — to get that exposure. The downside is you don’t have all the control. Sometimes when they put something on, they change the design a little bit to make it their own and our point of view is lost along the way.

I love working with Taylor Swift. Kristen Stewart has been amazing. Reese Witherspoon was a dream to work with on her wedding because she knew what she wanted and has a great sense of style. It was a very easy collaboration.

On having a CEO/husband …

It’s hard to keep family life and workplace separated. We always say we do but we don’t. When you’re married to your business partner, it’s very hard.

I always make sure his needs are met. We bounce ideas off of each other and he is my soul mate. Yes, everybody needs to work on their marriage but I feel like he is really an extension of me. I don’t know what I would do without him.

On work-life balance …

I realized when we were starting our company that you have to give up everything, personally, in the very beginning. There’s no balance at that point. It’s all about work. The first 10 years we worked almost 24 hours (a day). I mean, obviously we slept, but if we were not in the factory doing something, we were travelling, doing trunk shows, selling the collection. We did everything and I don’t think there’s any other way to start.

I am a perfectionist but I know how to live life. When I ‘m working, it’s 100%. When I’m with my friends, I put everything away and enjoy life. When I come home to my kids, it’s pure joy and everything’s worth it. Every time, I really focus 100 percent on one thing. I’ve learned how to juggle my life and I feel like now I have the perfect balance.

On how to live a good life …

I don’t know what tomorrow brings, but right now, I’m grateful for everything that I have. In the future, I’d like to be able to give back as well. That’s part of how I think one’s life should be led — start with a career, then have a beautiful family, and then it’s time to give back. That’s just the way the world should be.

On delegating …

That’s the only way to grow so we’re building our team and we do delegate but we never turn off our Blackberries or iPhones.

‘Traditional Ethnic Wedding’ For Angelina Jolie And Brad Pitt: Angie Trying to …

The forthcoming “summer” wedding would be Jolie’s third and Pitt’s second marriage, and Brangelina jointly is leaving no stone unturned to make it an unforgettable affair of their lives.

“They want it to be a big celebration with their family and friends,” the source said.

Brad and Angelina, both in their late 40s and 30s, respectively, have had their share of failed marriages in the past, which has apparently grounded them and made them more traditional and conventional in their outlook. The duo has also collectively gained some sage wisdom despite their contrasting preferences over the years.

On further details of the ethnic nuptial ceremony, the source says,“Brad envisioned a traditional ceremony, followed by dinner, speeches and a party,” Contact Music reported.

The couple, which has already lived with a lot of diversity with three children who have been adopted from different countries – Maddox, 10, Cambodian; Zahara, 7, Ethiopian and Pax, 9, Vietnamese, wants the wedding to be traditional.

Pitt would like to have the wedding at their 35-million-pound French chateau located near the village of Correns in southern France.

Meanwhile, Jolie, the bride-to-be, is hard at work trying to gain 10lbs to look more graceful on her big day. The source revealed that helping her achieve this is British chef Jamie Oliver, who gives her dietary tips on what to eat to gain a more healthy and shapely frame.

”Angelina has decided she’d like a more shapely figure when she weds Brad and is hoping to gain ten pounds. Brad and Angie have asked Jamie to suggest some recipe ideas for them,” the source told the magazine.

Well, it’s not only Jolie trying hard to get sexier and in shape, “even Brad’s now coming up with some English dishes like shepherd’s pie and sausage and mash as Angie never cooks,” the source said.

The duo will live in Britain with their six kids after the wedding as Jolie has films there, slated back-to-back. They have reportedly bought a $16.18 million house in Richmond, West London.

Brangelina’s big day

<!–Saxotech Paragraph Count: 7
–>

The vibe: For the African ceremony, warm and intimate: “I could imagine them getting married with a stunning African sunset under a large old tree hanging with dozens and dozens of lanterns.” For the L.A. party, the complete opposite: “Instead of buffets, I would have stations of food paired with great wines and cocktails,” culminating in a wedding-cake cutting to create a “fun, glamorous night.” To bridge the two events, at the end of the night, each party guest would receive a small booklet filled with “stunning images” of the family wedding abroad.

The guest list: In Africa, closest family only. In L.A., 200 friends.

The entertainment: In Africa, they would be serenaded by the local village choir. At the California reception, a musical mashup: a couple of rock violinists and a percussionist would accompany someone like DJ Cassidy, who spun at Beyoncé and Jay-Z’s bash. For the cake-cutting portion, a song by the pair’s favorite artist.

PLANNER:

Jung Lee of Fete, whose celebrity clients include the Bulgari family, Stephen King’s son Owen and Jann Wenner’s son Alexander.

The locale: Lee believes the rumors: Chateau Miraval. “It’s a revealing of the property for their closest friends and family that haven’t had a chance to visit yet.” Besides, “you can’t rent something like that.” Regardless, this will be an event that requires passports. “For sentimental reasons, I would love for them to actually have the wedding and give the proper glamour to the States, but I think it’s probably not feasible. They’re not going to have the privacy they need.”

The guest list: 200-300 people, “for sure.”

The vibe: “I would be completely shocked if it would be an all-white sort of wedding.” So Lee envisions noir nuptials: black mirrors; 2-foot candlesticks; dark, rich flowers; and, juxtaposed against the 14th-century surroundings, sleek, contemporary furniture for lounging. But it wouldn’t be all adult lair. Lee sees lots of children “running around the sprawling lawn. It can’t be more magnificent than that — sort of heaven on earth.” And for a late-night snack? Considering the clan’s photographed penchant for junk food, mini bags of McDonald’s cheeseburgers, french fries, hot apple pies and shakes flown in. It would satisfy the kids — and show the newlyweds’ sense of humor. “You’re drinking and you smell that oily McDonald’s? People live for it. People clap for it sometimes when we bring it out.”

Gift wrapping tips: Fashionable and functional ways to make packages extra special – Las Vegas Review

The warm weather seasons are well stocked with special occasions. Whether you’re saying best wishes at a friend’s wedding or offering congratulations to a recent grad, it’s easy to make your gift the brightest in the pile. Follow these simple tips to inspire your imagination and you’ll create gift wrapping that’s as special and personal as the present inside.

Add flair with unexpected wrapping materials
Ribbons don’t actually have to be made of ribbon. Go above and beyond traditional wrapping paper and bows by using non-traditional materials to wrap your gift. Delight the fashionistas in your life by using fun, colorful belts to keep boxes secure (and sneak them an extra accessory too). When giving cookware, wrap the package in new kitchen towels. For a going away party, wrap the gift in maps or images of the recipient’s destination. Attending a high school graduation party? Stick the gift box shut with a fun bumper sticker from the grad’s soon-to-be college or university. Make bows out of raffia, use leftover wallpaper instead of wrapping paper, or tie a scarf around the handles of a gift bag to add something extra special to your present.

Choose an alternative to clear tape
Amp up the style of your gift with printed packaging tape. A fun substitute for traditional clear tape, EZ Start Packaging Tape from Duck brand is available in nine decorative, trendy patterns – everything from funky Black Olives in lime green and pink to Midnight Paisley in sophisticated black and white – that are perfect for keeping wrapping paper in place while also adding an unexpected touch to gifts. Add the Pink Zebra print over solid wrapping paper to delight any birthday girl, or gear your gift for guys with the Graffiti Skulls pattern.

Create a one-of-a-kind container
Forego wrapping paper entirely and decorate the box itself. Create a unique design using stickers, stencil a monogram or pattern on the top, or decoupage it with images that remind you of the recipient. EZ Start Packaging Tape can also help makeover your gift package – completely cover the box in the tape, or use it to create stripes, chevron, checks or other patterns. To make the gift extra special, choose an unexpected item or shape to hold your present. Buckets, hat boxes, or (new) take-out containers can make for interesting packages. And, once it’s been personalized, the container itself serves as an added element of the gift.

Look to the occasion for inspiration
Theme your gift wrapping around the special occasion or holiday that you’re celebrating. Bridal shower? Use wedding traditions to inspire your wrapping – make sure it includes something borrowed (perhaps a beautiful pin to tie the ribbon), something blue (tissue paper), something old (include a photo of you and the bride on the box) and something new (the gift). On birthdays, be inspired by the recipient’s age – on a twelfth birthday, divide the gift into twelve small items, or wrap the present in an item that represents that number, like pages from a calendar. At graduations, wrap the package in the colors of the grad’s new college or university.

Make shipped items special
Even when loved ones are far away, it’s simple to make the outside of their package special and personal. Besides helping to glamorize gift wrapping or boxes, EZ Start Packaging Tape is also perfect for its original use: shipping items to loved ones away from home. Use the Camo pattern to send a gift to a friend or family member away in the military, or inspire some relaxation in stressed-out college students with a care package wrapped with the Tie-Dye or Green Peace tape patterns. It will make the package stand out and keep items safely secured.

Whether you’re a gift-wrapping pro or just learning to tie a ribbon, these easy tips will help you to give stylishly wrapped gifts for all of your special occasions. Pick up a few materials and let your imagination go – the present and the wrapping are sure to doubly delight your next gift recipient.

Warzone Robot Makes Wedding Super Cute

Warzone Robot Makes Wedding Super CuteEveryone knows that the best ring bearer is a darling little child, or, if possible, a wiener dog in a tiny dog tuxedo. Barring that, a Dragon Runner sentry and bomb disposal robot will do the trick. Tiny robo tux!

When you’re both a bride and a mechanical engineer/robot arm designer, you can pull off radical wedding maneuvers like this one: a fully robotic ring bearer that not only delivers your metallic love symbol with extreme prejudice, but can be heaved over a fence or out a three story window. The Dragon Runner, as the bot goes by when not making love connections, is designed to be worn and literally tossed around by Marines while in combat. That might sound like a fun thing to do during a wedding, but does it sound better than this report from the mother of the bride?

The music at the time was Mr. Roboto…One of Laura’s friends from work was wearing the backpack and using the control panel to control the Dragon Runner. That included the Dragon Runner’s entry onto the dance floor when the wedding party was introduced. It zipped in and did a “Saturday Night Fever” spin and pump.

Sorry for ruining your wedding by showing you this wedding, which features a robot ring bearer that danced. Unless yours also has a robotic ring bearer, in which case, welcome aboard. [Electronic Design, Thanks Curtis!]

9 Easy Ways To Make Your Mom Feel Special On Your Wedding Day

They may sometimes drive you crazy, but in the end you have your whole life to thank your mom for. Most couples have very little time to spend with all of their guests, which can sometimes leave your mom feeling neglected and make the pain of losing her baby sting just a little bit more. So in honor of Mother’s Day, I came up with a list of nine easy ways that you can treat your mother like a queen on your big day. Please share your own ideas in the comments below!

1. Go shopping with her for her dress. What to wear can be a big concern of mother-of-the-brides (MOBs) and mother-of-the-grooms (MOGs). I have actually seen two weddings where somehow the MOB and MOG wore the same dress, and plenty more where the two dresses looked very alike. Instant buzzkill for your mom. Spending a day with your mom to worry about what she’s going to wear and be comfortable in will make her feel great!

2. Arrange for a car and driver to take her to the wedding and back home. Because seriously, who wouldn’t want this kind of treatment?

3. Write a special love note to her in your program. Your mom is always bragging about you to her friends and family… why not take the opportunity to brag about her? I bet she’ll keep it in a scrapbook for you, too!

4. Treat her to hair, makeup, or a manicure on the Big Day. Letting your mom know that you want her to look and feel as good as you do on your wedding day will make her shine with confidence!

5. Include pictures of her in your slideshow. Yes, we want to see those embarrassing pictures of you as a kid with your mom in the backyard, the awkward teenage pictures with your mom’s trend-of-the-moment haircut, and pictures of your mom on her wedding day. Giving your guests a peek into your family life will instantly make the room feel warmer.

6. Make special decorations on her chair or place setting. It doesn’t have to say “MOB” on the back, just a little ribbon on the chair or a special handwritten “I love you” note on her place card will be a touching surprise for your mom.

7. Schedule in a dance for all the moms with their kids. Lee Ann Womack’s “I Hope You Dance” anyone? How about Whitney’s “I’m Every Woman”? Any other suggestions?

8. Walk down the aisle with your mother and your father. Breaking this tradition couldn’t hurt — but you’ll want to make sure that dad is okay with it first.

9. Incorporate mom’s favorite sweets in your desserts. I don’t know about your mom, but mine would be THRILLED to see some Almond Roca and those Toblerone chocolate oranges on my dessert buffet table. And if mom will let you share her secret chocolate chip cookie recipe with your caterer, all the better for you and your guests!
