Japanese lesbian can’t wait for Disneyland “wedding”

Wed May 16, 2012 8:23am EDT

TOKYO (Reuters) – Like many Japanese women, Koyuki Higashi adores Tokyo Disneyland. So it was only natural that she would want to hold her wedding there, as many other couples have done.

“My partner and I just love going to Disneyland, so when we saw a pamphlet advertising wedding receptions by the Cinderella Castle in Tokyo Disneyland we called and asked if we could hold our wedding there,” Higashi told Reuters in a telephone interview.

But Higashi is openly lesbian and her upcoming commitment ceremony is being characterised in the media as the first “gay wedding” to be held at Japan’s Magic Kingdom.

While U.S. President Barack Obama came out in favour of same-sex weddings last week, such a political stance remains a distant dream in Japan, where civil unions are not legally allowed and simply being openly gay remains taboo for many, even though there are no laws against homosexuality.

When Higashi gave them details of her plans, the hotel initially had one request.

“When I explained it would be with my female partner they hesitated and asked that one of us wear a tuxedo as the sight of two people with the same wedding dress would make other visitors to the park uncomfortable,” Higashi said.

After she questioned this, the resort promised to check things out and get back to her. A week later, Higashi was told she and her partner would be allowed to both wear wedding dresses, or both tuxedos, if so inclined.

“We have never refused a request for a same-sex marriage,” said a spokeswoman at Milial Resort Hotels, a subsidiary of Tokyo Disney Resort.

“As for the issue of clothing, initially there was incomplete understanding on the part of our staff.”

After Higashi posted about the issue on her blog, a flood of social media commentary caught the attention of the media, which said that Tokyo Disneyland was now in the gay wedding business.

The spokeswoman said that while there were no special wedding packages on offer, gay couples could choose to take part in whatever reception plan they fancied. Higashi and her partner chose the “Disney Royal Dream Wedding,” which includes greetings by Disney characters and use of the Cinderella Castle.

Nevertheless, the twitter frenzy over the issue caught the attention of the local media both traditional and online, which all proclaimed Tokyo Disneyland now open for gay wedding business.

Higashi, who is also a gay activist in Japan, said she hoped her decision would help open public conversation about an issue that has yet to be broadly discussed socially as well as politically.

“There are no civil unions in Japan or any laws that would protect our relationships,” she said, noting that part of the problem lies within the still largely closeted gay community, which fears the repercussions of stepping forward.

“There is still a lot of prejudice at work and in people’s homes to prevent a lot of us from coming out,” she said. “Also when the only public gays you see are the comedians on television who are the butt of public ridicule, it’s hard to find a good reason to come out.”

For now, Higashi said she was looking forward to planning her wedding reception, though a firm date has yet to be set.

“We can only continue to press on for change and hope for change,” she added.

What is Pinterest?

What are some examples? If you love trips to Disney World, create a board to celebrate the vacation destination. Include pictures of your favorite rides, foods you’ve enjoyed and even characters you’d like to meet on your next trip. Wedding boards are very popular as well. Brides-to-be pin images of stunning gowns, creative centerpiece ideas, hair accessories and honeymoon destination ideas.

How do I join? Pinterest is free; however, you need an invitation to join. Potential members can request an invitation on the site’s home page or ask a friend who is a member to send an invitation. Pinterest simply requests an email address from members. After your invitation has been offered and you’ve accepted, you can create an account password and user name, or sign in using your Twitter or Facebook accounts.

How do I pin something to my board? There are multiple ways to make a pin, but after creating an account, Pinterest will prompt you to add a “Pin It” button to your browser’s toolbar, which is the fastest way to create a pin. When you find something interesting to add to one of your boards, click on your Pin It button and follow the prompts. You can also add a Pinterest app to your smartphone. Do you have your own website? Add the Pinterest “Follow Me” button to your site or a “Pin It” button, just as you would the link buttons for Twitter, Facebook, StumbleUpon and other social networking sites.

What can I put on my pinboards? Pinboards offer a virtual world for users to create unique collections of images. The site provides pinboard categories such as art, fitness, gardening, holidays, home décor, kids, sports, travel and weddings. You can choose to use these categories for your collections, or you can create your own boards.

Who can see my pinboards? Any Pinterest member can see your boards and subscribe to follow them. You can also look at other members’ boards and follow your favorites. Like Twitter and Facebook, you will have friends you follow and who follow you. Members can comment on images and repin (copy) images from one board to their own. Only you can pin images to your boards, or you can choose people to pin on one of your boards, too.

Who is using Pinterest? Founded in 2010 by Ben Silbermann and Paul Sciarra, Pinterest, according to TechCrunch.com, now has more than 10.4 million users, with about 9 million of those users connecting via their Facebook accounts. Based on data from Inside Network, TechCrunch reports 97 percent of the people who click “like” on Pinterest’s Facebook are female.

Top 10 weirdest wedding themes

Weird wedding theme 1: vampire wedding

Of course we all know about the vampire trend; what with the Twilight movies and images of Robert Pattinson gracing our screens. But we didn’t imagine it would inspire a gothic, vampire themed wedding. Considering we imagine a wedding as a joyful and happy event it could be said that the gothic gloom of the Twilight movies isn’t quite suited. But this hasn’t stopped couples from turning their favourite movie into a wedding theme. Everything has been done from dusting the groom head to toe in glitter to quoting romantic lines from the Twilight novels in the wedding vows. If you’re a big fan of vampires, this might just be the wedding theme for you.

Weird wedding theme 2: superhero wedding

For one couple in America, their wedding was supercharged, as at the altar stood Superman and Wonder Woman. As for the guests, heroes ranged from Ironman to the Silver Surfer, making this wedding far from the ordinary. If you’re swayed by a superhero theme, the fun doesn’t have to end at the costumes; couples have chosen superhero favours such as lollypops with capes and masks, done the deed in a comic book store and even decorated the tables with comic inspired ‘POWs’ and ‘ZAPs’!

Weird wedding theme 3: shark tank wedding

In June 2010, Mr and Mrs Curry of New York climbed into a 120,000 gallon shark tank to publicly declare their love for each other. Along with their scuba gear, the bride wore a white wetsuit and the groom a black one – at least some aspects of their wedding hinted at tradition! All the while sand sharks, nurse sharks, eels and a giant grouper circled around them. An officiant proceeded with the vows on a radio transmitter which was then broadcasted to friends and family.

Weird wedding theme 4: nude wedding

The current average cost of a wedding isn’t under a five figure sum, and with the wedding dress often making up a tenth of that figure it’s no wonder couples seek out something cheaper. Naturally (excuse the pun) when we think of a cheaper option we think of sales or auctions – not ditching the bride and groom’s clothing completely like some people do! A couple in Australia decided to paint the wedding dress on the bride, then bravely exchanged vows in front of 250 friends and family. Both bride and groom were completely naked, although the groom did use a strategically placed top hat to maintain his dignity.

bunjee jumpingbunjee jumping

Weird wedding theme 5: bungee jumping wedding

Crazy thrill seekers from Belgium chose a unique but fun theme for their wedding; bungee jumping! Bungee jumping, although a terrifying prospect for some, was apparently this couple’s ideal way to get hitched. After exchanging their vows the couple jumped over a 150 ft drop and romantically smooched hanging upside down in the air, while directly below friends and family watched. The mid-air wedding theme didn’t end there, as wedding guests were then invited to head skyward to be strapped up on a platform for a floating wedding breakfast.

Weird wedding theme 6: marmite themed wedding

Marmite; you either love it or hate it. We all have a favourite food – something we would happily eat all day long, but would you go as far as theming your wedding after it? One couple loved marmite so much they themed their wedding around the stuff. The wedding couple arrived at their ceremony in a Marmite shaped car, the groom wore a Marmite inspired top hat, and there was even a Marmite flavoured wedding cake and favours to match. Perhaps the brown, gloopy yeast extract that is Marmite isn’t everyone’s taste, but a food themed wedding isn’t such a bad idea!

Weird wedding theme 7: role reversal wedding

Ever fancied being the opposite sex for a day? Bizarrely many couples are taken up with the idea of swapping their normal gender roles for the day, and taking on the role of their partner for their wedding. A beautiful blushing bride is now a man with a top hat and a suit, while the manly groom seems to have a pink pout and rosy cheeks. Not only do the bride and groom swap, but the ushers and bridesmaids sometimes take on the role reversal challenge too – an interesting wedding party to say the least.

Weird wedding theme 8: Shrek themed wedding

Twilight is not the only film to have been replicated in wedding form; possibly one of the oddest film choices for a wedding theme, on couple chose to base their wedding around the fairy tale film Shrek. After watching the film on their first date, and then being ridiculed by friends for their similarity to the ogre couple, husband and wife took it to a new level; marrying dressed as two big green beasts. Guests arrived in other fairy tale outfits, such as Goldilocks and the three little pigs.

Weird wedding theme 9: Star Wars wedding

It had to be part of the list, a wedding theme which people universally seem to be keen on; Star Wars obsessed couples all over the world seem to be tying the knot in this sci-fi way. The groom has often taken the role of Han Solo and the bride Princess Leia. It has even been known for R2D2 to be the wedding officiant. As your wedding takes place you can be sure that Chewbacca, Obi Wan Kenobi and a fleet of stormtroopers will be watching on. A theme which everyone can get involved in, but still just as wacky.

Weird wedding theme 10: murder mystery wedding

Weddings generally tend to be fun; a time to dance, be merry and meet lots of people you might never see again! But occasionally weddings hit a lull where the guests get bored and the atmosphere deadens. For couples who fear the wedding woe of bored guests, here’s one way to keep them entertained; while the speeches are happening, all of a sudden a guest is found ‘dead’. It’s up to the rest of the wedding to follow the clues and find out who’s the killer! Could it be a jealous ex-boyfriend to blame or the angry father who was against the wedding from the beginning? Lanning Roper: Remembering the garden designer

The flag garden doesn’t really stay with me, but a small, charming double border does. It was created in another part of the grounds by a consummate plantsman and designer named Lanning Roper. This year marks the centennial of his birth, and while his work is inherently fleeting, his credo persists: Know your plants, have fun with them, but pay attention to structure and design.

Roper was born of blue-blood New England stock in West Orange, N.J., and died before his time in 1983. He lived most of his life in England, where he became a respected and prolific designer of, for the most part, private gardens.

Somewhat overgrown and tired by the time I saw it, the border still possessed a distinctly different character. It had more shrubs than was fashionable, and though there was a considered color scheme, the most striking aspect was the lively composition of leaf texture.

By now, most of his work has been lost to time and changing tastes, and his legacy has mostly vanished with his gardens, except perhaps for a book about him and his gardens by Jane Brown, published by Rizzoli in 1987.

I turn to it often for inspiration, perusing the plant border plans, for Roper had a deft and easy touch when it came to forming artful plant groupings, a skill that does not come easily or quickly to most of us.

“The Oxford Companion to the Garden” describes Roper as a designer who “practiced in a relaxed English style with exuberant mixed borders and a refined sense of architecture.”

English but with an American eye. With a little tweaking of the plant selection, his compositions would fit elegantly into our gardens and climate. (No romneyas, hebes or ceanothus, alas.) What is remarkable about Roper is that while he designed large gardens for industrialists, aristocrats and even royalty, he seemed to do his most pleasing work in small domestic settings.

What do I like about his borders? They are both architectural and effusive, combining flowery perennials such as echinops, helianthemums and lilies with soothing mounds of lavender, lamb’s ears or phlomis, along with small and medium-sized shrubs as visual anchors. He liked to use mahonias, viburnums and sumacs for this role.

For his borders, he used the whole bag of tricks short of annuals and grasses, employing evergreen and deciduous shrubs, perennials, herbs and bulbs. He was telling us: Use loads of plants, but make the design clear. His compositions were soft but not mushy; they had form and a certain rhythm achieved by repeating plants here and there. He loved to insert roses into his borders, and his refined taste drew him to some beauties: Nevada, Frau Dagmar Hastrup, Buff Beauty, Charles de Mills and Cardinal Richelieu. His four favorite climbers, wrote Brown, were New Dawn (the now ubiquitous, silver pink beauty); Wedding Day (rampant and with eye-catching fruits); Felicite Perpetue (soft pink blooms and vigorous growth) and Adelaide d’Orleans (a blushed, profuse and soft-petaled beauty).

Roper also used boxwood to provide strong forms to his compositions. Given the astonishing low-care, long-flowering roses that have been developed since his death, one could imagine him refining his borders with even better material. The same thought extends to boxwood, where new hybrids have almost the same fine texture as some of the old English and dwarf Kingsville box, but are healthier and more handsome for it.

Color schemes were important to Roper, though the black-and-white photos in the book demonstrate that without attention paid first to assemblages of texture and form, color is nothing.

When he employed color, he used signature themes. Importantly, the hues were carried by the foliage as much as with the more fleeting flowers.

He liked color schemes of “soft pinks, mauvy-blues and silvers,” wrote Brown, or yellows, creams and grays. He also wanted his gardens to have “blood-red roses on a stone wall, glossy green leaves, puffs of lavender or lavender-cotton, sweeps of autumn’s russets and golds, and always the scents of roses and his aristocratic loves, lilies and tulips,” she wrote.

Roper may have become better known if his last commission had come to fruition. In 1981, Prince Charles had bought his estate, Highgrove, and had turned to Roper to develop the gardens. (Brown wrote that he had been recommended by the prince’s future wife, Camilla Parker Bowles. Roper had designed her parents’ garden in the 1960s.) But by the early 1980s, Roper had become weakened by his cancer, and he begged off. Prince Charles used other designers to help him, but in time he became his own skilled gardener, driven by his organic interests.

Roper would have been sensitive to nature, but his gardens existed in a purer time when horticulture was less freighted by ecological imperatives. His gardens and, particularly, his borders were assembled by a master for their own simple beauty and joyfulness. Imagine such a thing.

Summer Outdoor Weddings: Top 5 Must-Dos When Saying ‘I Do’

With Memorial Day just around the corner, more couples are planning to exchange their vows in the great outdoors. Although it’s important to focus on the right shoes to accompany your custom-made wedding dress, it is also vital to keep the guests’ comfort in mind.

Below are five things to note when planning the perfect outdoor wedding:

Choose a Back-Up: No matter what season of the year it is, there is always a chance that the forecast won’t hold up. In the event of torrential downpours or a flash flood in the middle of hot July, always have a back-up plan! I’ve seen too many wedding ceremonies get rained on and everything go to waste. Research some places that could be used as a last minute rental, or have an oversized tent on-site that you can scoot your guests and tables under in the event of light rain. Be sure to let everyone who is going to be a part of your special day, including guests, your bridal party, caterers, florist, band, etc, know where your back up location is PRIOR to the day of your wedding. Quick Tip: Include a space on the bottom of your invitation that reads something like: In case of rain, our wedding will be held at xyz.

What’s on the menu? There are certain foods that pair well with each season. For the summer, make sure your caterer serves up the most refreshing and light hors d’oeuvres that compliment your summer ceremony. Some popular summer bites are melon, mozzarella and prosciutto brochettes, zucchini and goat’s cheese tarts or even a bowl of mixed berries and tossed greens. But, there is no better way to wash away the heat and snacks than sipping on a mouthwatering fruity drink. Chill down your guests with sparkling white sangria, limey mojitos, or even a classic Pina Colada. Quick Tip: Be sure that all summer drink choices have a non-alcoholic option! Provide as much filtered water as you can to avoiding dehydrating yourself and your guests… it’s going to be a long night!

Be Heard: If you’re outside in the mountains or down in the valley, there will always be background noise. Whether it’s a light summer breeze, the loud chirp of singing birds or the distant sounds of engines on a nearby highway, your guest should always be able to hear your vows and music clearly. Make sure the DJ, your microphones and the speakers are in appropriate places that will enable everyone to hear perfectly and comfortably. Quick Tip: Do a sound check a day or two before the wedding. This way, any changes and adjustments will be taken care of prior to the day of the wedding.

Avoid the Bites: The last way you want your wedding night to be remembered is the attendance of uninvited guests: BUGS! Many people worry that Citronella candles ruin the ambiance of their reception. Correction — Mosquitoes will ruin the ambiance of your reception! There are citronella candles that come in pillars rather than tin buckets that can easily replace scented candles. Plus, a couple of Tiki Lamps and Citronella candles will enhance the feel of your summer wedding. Quick Tip: Cover the citronella tins and tiki lamps with decorative floral arrangements to brighten your candles.

Design to Shine: Nothing says summer better than this year’s bright pink and orange hues. Rather than incorporating a bunch of colors in one space, choose a bright color and an accent color to coordinate your décor. When planning your centerpieces, stick to the bright color and combine different shades to create an original color combo. Bright colored lilies, roses and tulips make for an elegant but bold centerpiece with the help of natural sunlight. Be sure to coordinate your table linens and dishware with a paler, lighter color to balance a calm contrast.

Police hunt newlywed husband in bride’s stabbing
May 15, 2012 22:46 GMT

%reldate(2012-05-15T22:42:26

CHICAGO (AP) — Police are searching for the newlywed husband of a woman whose body was found stabbed and clothed in the silver sequin cocktail dress she wore at her wedding reception.

Police in the Chicago suburb of Burbank said Tuesday that they’re searching for 30-year-old Arnoldo Jimenez on a first-degree murder warrant.

Jimenez and 26-year-old Estrella Carrera were married Friday at Chicago’s city hall. They had dinner with friends at a restaurant, then took a limo to a nightclub. They were last seen around 4 a.m. Saturday.

Her body was found Sunday afternoon in the bathtub of her apartment in Burbank.

An autopsy Monday determined she died of multiple stab wounds. The Cook County medical examiner’s office ruled the death a homicide. Carrera left behind two children, ages 8 and 2.
