My 5 Favorite Things (That Have Made Wedding Planning More Enjoyable)

There are a lot of products out there. A whole lot of websites. A lot of gimmicks, Groupons, photographers, and commercials for lipstick that allegedly lasts 16 hours. Flipping through the pages of a bridal magazine, or even your favorite fashion one can leave you more confused than calmed. Also, as soon as your change your Facebook status from “In a Relationship,” to “Engaged,” a new breed of advertisement’s take over the side bar of your Home Page. So how do you know which products and services are good, and which ones will leave you feeling cheated and ripped off? Well, it’s a jungle out there and a lot of it is a crapshoot. However, here are my five favorite products and services, which I have tested out to save you the trouble.

1. Maybelline Colossal Mascara in Glam Black – Waterproof

Amazing. An absolutely perfect product. I have tried everything from the $5 mascaras you find in the drug stores to the $45 dollar mascaras you find in Sephora and nothing has ever been as good as this mascara. The color is extremely dark, and gives dramatic definition to any lashes. In fact, any time I have worn this mascara around my mother, she has asked me if my lashes were fake. It’s the best $7-$9 bucks you’ll ever spend on make-up.

2. WeddingPaperDivas.com

Swift, easy, and a really reliable product. I ordered my Save The Date’s and Engagement Party invitations from this website, and I was extremely happy with how both of them came out. In fact, when I wrote my mailing address incorrectly on the website, their support team contacted me (before I even knew the mistake had been made!) to correct it. The colored ink they use is very vibrant, and they send you a “Digital Proof” before creating your order to make sure everything is correct. If you’re looking for a more affordable approach to Invitations and Thank You card’s, I highly recommend them.

3. Emmalinebride.com

I happened upon this website by accident when I was doing a Google search for place cards. You will find a lot of fun and easy DIY projects on this site. Or if you’re less artistically coordinated (like myself), it will link you to many beautiful products you can buy from start up vendors. The site is designed beautifully, and really easy to navigate around. It has more décor ideas than any wedding site I have found so far. It even gives great ideas of what you can get your bridesmaids as a token of your appreciation.

4. Chellise Michael Photography

Stunning! I had the privilege of using Chellise as my photographer for my engagement shoot, and to say that the pictures came out beautifully, would be an understatement. My fiancé and I were actually the first couple allowed to take their engagement pictures in the New York Public Library, Bryant Park Branch, without having their wedding there. The space itself was tremendous and Chellise knew exactly where to go and what shots to take to ensure a gorgeous and professional catalog of images. I highly recommend her for a fun shoot, and a beautiful spread! For a quick look, check out her website.

5. Wedding Planning Complete, by Wedding Solutions.com
An easy to use, fun IPhone App that allows you to electronically plan and organize your wedding on the go! My entire guest list is on here and it also allows you to email the list directly from the App. You even select which guests are for the groom, and which are for the bride, so there’s no confusion over who Aunt Joyce is. Other features’ include, budget, seating chart, RSVP’s and more. The best part? It’s free. I have one of those giant binders and I end up using this App a lot more often. If you love to be organized, and don’t want a mess with a lot of papers, I would highly recommend using this fantastic and free application.

Flock to fair to plan a vintage wedding with flair

BRIDES-TO-BE will be able to check out the latest trends in dresses, jewellery and limousines today at the Canberra Wedding Fair.

The event will also give couples a chance to gather some inspiration for planning a vintage-themed wedding, incorporating plenty of those special ingredients – something old and something blue.

The popularity of rustic-styled vintage motifs in the ACT has increased dramatically in the past 18 months and Canberra wedding expert Ally Knights, of Events by Ally, said it was not hard to see why. ”Canberra brides want to be a lot more hands-on these days and to be able to make their weddings really personal and individual,” she said.

”There is a trend toward having more of a DIY-style wedding, where brides get to use a lot of their own creativity.

”The rustic vintage theme includes the country garden look with tarnished silver pieces.

”The popular colours at the moment tend to be coral with pinks and watermelon and tangerine – those sunset colours. Mint green is also big at the moment.

”Often people will pick their colours and then plan the whole wedding around that from the invitations and table settings to flowers and dresses.”

The wedding fair, sponsored by The Canberra Times, will be held at the Australian Institute of Sport in Bruce between 10am and 4pm and will feature parades at 11.30am and 2.30pm.

Event organiser Andy Obst said there would be about 70 stalls with information about floral displays, beautiful hair and make-up, photography, jewellery, honeymoon ideas and bridal couture. A honeymoon at the Hyatt Regency Sanctuary Cove, sponsored by 104.7 Canberra, will be given away at 3pm.

Admission is $15, or $10 for concession card-holders, and children under 10 are for free.

Trends in Asian Bridal Fashion

Asian women today are not sticking with traditional colours

Growing up every little girl wants to be a Princess one day. To have her Prince Charming look at her on their wedding day and fall in love all over again. All guests to gasp upon her grand entrance that she (the bride) is the most beautiful bride in the world.

Traditional Asian bridal fashion has come a long way from the simplistic suit look to the most lush and expensive garments designed for the special day today. Many would see this is a direct influence of the changes in British Asian society and women taking more control of their lives and dreams.

Thirty years back, Asian brides would dress in a simple Indian/Pakistani suit, and probably the first time they ever wore any make up. Twenty years back, brides would dress up in a traditional red sari and adorned with Indian gold. The more gold the bride wore would indicate the family status.

Normally, the bride’s mother would choose the sari and the bride would wear this on their big day. But this has all changed now. Young Asian women are taking more control on what they want to wear from their registry office wedding to the traditional Asian wedding. Everything carefully chosen down to the very last detail.

Ten years back the fashion of bridal wear was normally a heavy Lengha either red, burgundy or dark pink. The skirt would be long with not much shape and a tunic top. The Chunni would be very heavy. But now the theme, shades, styles, patterns are dictated and styled by the brides themselves.

Brides to be will visit many of the Asian Wedding Exhibitions up and down the country to physically see what is in this season. Everything from venues, clothes, makeup down to bindis. Some brides work with designers in the UK or even take that trip to India and Pakistan to find their perfect outfit.

Online retailers from UK, USA and India are exhibiting their collections, giving a bride more choice for her to decide on what she wants to wear for her special day.

Dependent upon the theme and colours chosen for the venue, the bride to be would make sure that her wedding outfit would also reflect this in its full glory.

Brides are also going for the traditional white and creams for their registry office weddings, with a hint of the west in the shape and style of the outfits. The lenghas will have a train, and the skirt of the lengha will be shaped to the bride’s body shape. Most popular is the fish tail cut.

The wedding outfits themselves are very glamorous, with sexy cut blouses to match the lengha skirt. At present the tops are very short and the lengha skirt worn just under the belly button. Similar to the new collection of saris that have graced the Bollywood screens.

To combine the two there is the trend of the Bridal Lengha Sari which combines the classiness of the lengha with the elegance of the sari. This give you the choice of wearing the two as one outfit.

For those who are not too comfortable to show off their tummy’s strapless corset tops, off shoulder, halter necks with a slim lined skirt is just as sexy and chic.

Asian women today are not sticking with traditional colours such as deep reds and pinks for their bridal gowns. It’s a whole selection of colours; solid colours such as megenta, purple, brown, mustard and pastels such as violet, blues and greens. Infusions of colours are used such as cerise and peach are also observed in bridal fashion.

Designs are intricate with beading, crystals and threading with semi-precious gem stones which are hand-crafted. Net based pallus, jari and resham embroidery, shiny sequin borders and paisley design motifs are examples of the hand-crafted work on the wedding attire. Some outfits have a touch of Alexandra McQueen and Vera Wang ruffles, layers and train.

To complete your important look do not put the jewellery second place. The wrong jewellery can either make or break an outfit.

Gone are the days to wearing heavy Indian gold. The jewellery that brides choose today is matched in great detail with the outfits themselves. Majority of the time this is designed with the outfit which gives an authentic look and a one off piece.

Another trend which has taken off in British Asian Weddings is the matching of outfits of the bridesmaids and the bride’s mother.

Based on the colour and theme, Asian brides want their bridesmaids and their mothers to wear a similar colour or a particular colour on the wedding day. The bride’s mother, if wearing a similar colour to the bride, would wear a much more simple design.

The bridesmaids can either wear the same colour or a colour selected by the bride to complement her outfit. Many are choosing contrasting colours such as blue for the bridesmaids and pink for the bride. The bridesmaids can wear saris identical to each other, and when the bride walks into the venue for the ceremony, the bride leads in her stunning identical bridesmaids who follow her. A heavy influence of the West, but works just a brilliantly and an amazing moment for guests to witness.

For the men there is also the trend of using ‘groomsmen’ who are not just a single ‘sarwala’ but a group of men wearing complimenting sherwanis to the groom’s sherwani and colours.

Here are some tips to help the Asian bride on her big day:

  • Do go to some of the Asian Bridal shows. All very well looking in ‘Bridal Magazines’, but to see what is out there physically will help with what you want to wear, make up, jewellery, and it’s always worth asking some of the experts for their advice.
  • Work with the designers/suppliers of Asian wedding gowns and bridal wear. It’s YOUR BIG DAY, you should be happy with your bridal outfit.
  • If you are getting your outfit especially made then make sure measurements and fitting is done physically rather than giving another outfit to use as a guide. Especially, if you are getting it made abroad.
  • If you are buying a ready made outfit and it needs adjusting, make sure you use a reputable tailor. You don’t want to ruin your outfit by cheap craftsmanship.
  • Co-ordinate your accessories from shoes, handbags to the colour of your eye shadow so that it all ‘connects’ as a well thought out theme.
  • Look at outfit colours that you like and feel comfortable with because you are the one who is going to wear it on the day! Keeping in with traditional colours can give you scope for adding other colours to your theme; since the reds, pinks and cerise colours all give a wonderful heritage feel to your outfit should you want that look.
  • DO go for make-up bridal trials. Take all if not part of your outfit. Last thing you want is your make up not matching your fabulous outfit you have taken time, effort and cost on.
  • Very important to go for pre-wedding shoots. You can co-ordinate your make up trial the same day. At least you can see what you will look like with the make-up used by your chosen make-up artist. Also you and your partner can bond with the photographer. This will help on the big day. Pictures will not look ‘too stiff’ and will be more natural and artistic.
  • If you are having brides maids and groomsmen, co-ordinate the colour of the outfits for both sides and make sure that they do not clash with both your outfit or your partner’s attire (same can be said about the bride and groom’s mother’s outfits).
  • Flowers (if used as centre pieces on the tables ) table cloths, chairs, should also be co-ordinated with the main colours of the bride and grooms outfit. Hence, you create a magnificent colour theme for your special day.

Asian women of today are taking more control of what they want on their BIG day. Carefully planning this production from start till end and perfecting every detail. And your outfit is the pinnacle of the event as everyone will want to see you dressed like a Princess for the Day because the momentous day shall always be a true memory of a lifetime.

Budget weddings — how to save money when you marry: Plain Dealing

weddingtedcrow.jpgView full size

There’s a new formula for happily ever afters.

Love + economic reality = leaner weddings.

While it’s tough to get a realistic figure on what couples spend on weddings — organizations stocked with wedding planners and pros quote figures of up to $27,000 — a American Express survey released in April found evidence couples are trimming expenses.

A third of married couples surveyed said they simplified ceremonies overall to cut costs, and a quarter nixed hiring a wedding planner.

“I cringe when I hear how some people spend over $20,000 on their wedding and struggling to pay their bills. Not us!” said Tina Marie Darrisaw, who works at Cuyahoga Community College.

Darrisaw threw a wedding for a sleek $5,000.

She shopped stores like Target, Michael’s and Pat Catan’s for inexpensive decorations and turned to the deli at Giant Eagle to feed guests at the reception.

When it was time to buy a wedding dress, she headed to the clearance rack at David’s Bridal and snagged one for $109, she said.

She held the price for bridesmaids’ dresses under $100 and found $60 tuxes for the groomsmen. “I didn’t want to break anybody’s budget,” she said.

When the Plain Dealer asked readers for budget wedding advice, Northeast Ohioans said they’d found plenty of creative ways to cut costs without sacrificing charm.

Be yourself

Diana Everett insists weddings that reflect the personality of the bride and groom are more memorable than those that involve large outlays of cash. At one blue-grass wedding she attended, the bride and groom said their vows outdoors, under a stand of trees.

“The wedding party and the bride and groom changed into their bib overalls, the blue grass music began, and we all danced until dawn. The tables were covered with red-and-white-checked table cloths, and the centerpieces were wildflowers in mason jars,” she says. “Beyond charming.”

Roger Rhoads and his fiancee are having a Lego-themed wedding in December. Their sheet cake will be decorated with candy Legos. Attendants are wearing Lego tie clasps or earrings. And in lieu of flowers, the couple plans on filling cheap glass bowls with second-hand Legos for guests to play with.

Other ways to keep it personal:

• Go for understated elegance. A librarian can help you track down books with cost-saving ideas.

• Whittle the guest list. Fewer guests mean fewer invitations to buy and mail, fewer faces to feed and smaller venues to rent.

Aim out of the park

When Louise and Ric Goodwin married last month, a second wedding for each, the Parma couple chose to hold the ceremony at Malabar Farms, a state park near Mansfield. “We are an older couple and wanted a memorable ceremony, not a fancy wedding,” Louise Goodwin said.

They were at the historic farm’s “Big House” less than an hour (the maximum allowed) and then whisked their guests to the lodge at nearby Mohican State Park for breakfast.

Vince Adamus of Highland Heights said that when he and his wife Vickie married 18 years ago this month, they chose to wed at Chicago’s city parks. They splurged on a caterer who grilled outdoors and a rental tent and chairs just in case it rained. Guests were warned to wear “picnic casual.”

“We had all sorts of picnic games for people including volleyball, water guns, softball, kites,” he recalled. “It was a fantastic event and everyone had a blast.” In addition to spending very little, he said, “the stress was minimal.”

Other ways to save on venues:

• Try off-peak seasons, days and times. (Check with caterers on this, too.) Ask venues if they offer packages that might help you trim other costs.

• Look for offbeat venues. A bed-and-breakfast might serve as a place for the ceremony, reception and hotel if your guest list is small.

• Host the reception at the church or temple where the ceremony is held.

Tap your creativity

Barbara Berry, who has catered weddings for friends, said making centerpieces can save couples a mint. For one friend, she weighted the bases of long-stemmed roses cut in different lengths and then sank them in tall water-filled vases, three roses per vase. “We added four votive candles around the vase and it was very elegant, yet fairly inexpensive,” she said.

Other suggestions:

• Use helium balloons or other decorative items in lieu of flower centerpieces.

• Borrow from friends. Some brides buy or borrow decorations from recently married friends. Venues may have decorations available, too.

• Go for a minimalist look. If the place is pretty enough, Everett said, you may be able to get by with just a single floral arrangement.

Put your reception on a diet

When Judie Amsel and her husband married, a second wedding for both, they planned a small wedding – but their friends had other plans.

“So many people told us they wanted to be there that we realized we had to adjust,” she said. They switched to mid-day ceremony, which let them skip serving a meal, and hired a caterer to stage an ice cream social.

Early-risers could try a morning ceremony followed by a brunch or light lunch.

Other ways cut costs for food and drink:

• Substitute hearty appetizers for a meal, which could save you money on centerpieces and table rentals, too.

• Downsize the bar. Instead of mixed drinks, offer beer and wine.

• Order a small wedding cake and supplement with sheet cakes.

Give attendants a break

In April, Wendy Matthews’ daughter, Megan, was planning a 2013 wedding cruise. But when Megan’s fiance, Dominic Howard, learned he was being deployed to Afghanistan right after his graduation from Ohio State University, the couple moved the date up to this month.

Matthews tracked down dresses at a department store (in her case, Nordstrom’s) that offered free shipping, so bridesmaids could get any alterations without traveling to Ohio for fittings.

Other good ways to be kind to attendants’ wallets:

• Consider swapping suits for tuxes.

•Get rid of the matchy-match bridesmaids. Pick a dress color and length and let each bridesmaid use the guidelines to find a flattering dress she likes and can afford.

• Pare down the attendants list. You don’t need a posse. The fewer people you have, the more you’ll save on the rehearsal dinner and wedding-day transportation.

As the Spirit Moves Me: Wedding memories abound at Little Brown Church – Post

This story should bring back many wedding memories from The Little Brown Church at Nashua, Iowa. Some time after World War 1, weddings “caught on” with 400 weddings per year and over 74,000 since they started keeping tally around 1920. And it all started with a hymn before the church was built in 1862.

It’s quite a story as a young music teacher named William Pitts traveled by stage coach from Wisconsin to Iowa to meet his future wife. At Bradford, Iowa, he walked down Cedar Street while horses were being changed on the stage coach and saw a little plot of land surrounded by trees. He thought, “wouldn’t this be a nice place for a church?” He went back to Wisconsin, wrote a hymn called “The Church in the Wildwood” and put the music into a drawer and practically forgot about it. Meanwhile, the residents of Bradford, about 500 now, wanted to build a church.

Queen’s wedding dress named UK’s most desirable outfit

The Queen’s embellished wedding dress has been crowned the nation’s most desirable outfit worn by her majesty, over the past 60 years, according to Debenhams.

Known for her love of soft tailoring, subtle embellishment and coordinating accessories, The Queen has been setting trends of her own for decades.

With all eyes on her in her Jubilee year, high street retailer Debenhams asked 3,500 of its customers to vote on their favourite look from her years in the spotlight.

The beautiful wedding gown designed by Norman Hartnell, made of ivory duchess satin and decorated with around 10,000 white pearls, which she famously saved up ration cards to purchase the material needed to marry her prince charming in 1947, has won the hearts of her fans with nearly a quarter (24%) of Debenhams’ customers favouring this as her best outfit in her extensive wardrobe.

Following the trend for a floor length dress, the lace gown she wore whilst on a visit to Australia in 1954 was the second most desirable outfit in her collection receiving 14% of votes.

The blue powder dress and hat at the wedding of The Prince and Princess of Wales in 1981 completes the top three with 11% of customers preferring this outfit.

Russell Fish, Head of Design of Occasionwear for Debenhams said: “From primrose yellow day coats to large couture ballgowns, silk headscarves to dashing turbans, the Queen is a very particular style icon and someone who heralds British design to be proud of.

“During her 60 years on the throne her style has evolved but you can see a common sense of style through her wardrobe. In her Jubilee year, our customers look at her for fashion advice as we have seen “The Queen effect with sales of long gloves, pearls, pastel clothing and classic headscarves all proving popular. Concluded Fish.

IRS To-Dos Before You Say ‘I Do’

<!–

–>

Wedding cakePlanning a wedding takes a huge amount of effort. But as much as you may not want to add one more thing to your to-do list, you really need to get a handle on how getting married will affect your relationship with Uncle Sam and the IRS.

In many cases, getting hitched can mean big changes in your tax situation, and the sooner you start planning, the more likely it is you’ll avoid some huge pitfalls that snare many newlyweds.

Will You Owe More or Less?

The first question you have to figure out is whether being married will boost or cut your tax bill. In the past, tax brackets created a marriage penalty for most two-income couples, but changes to the tax laws eliminated that penalty for lower-bracket taxpayers. On the other hand, families with a single breadwinner could enjoy a marriage bonus that lets you take advantage of lower brackets for more of your income.

Once you figure out whether you’ll owe more or less, the next step is changing your tax withholding from your paycheck to reflect your new tax bill. Because the IRS treats you as married for the whole year regardless of whether your wedding is in January, June, or December, you’ll want to make those adjustments sooner rather than later. In fact, doing so before you get married may be the best way to avoid any penalties if your taxes will go up. To change your withholding, talk to your HR department at work to get a new Form W-4 filled out.

Picking a Filing Status

When it comes time to file your first tax returns, you and your spouse will have to decide whether to file jointly or separately. The decision can make a huge impact on how much you pay in total.

For most couples, filing jointly makes the most sense. Because joint filers get to add up all their income and deductions together, they typically get maximum benefit from the lower tax brackets, cutting their overall tax bill. By contrast, separate filers can end up paying far more in total taxes, especially if one spouse earns a lot more than the other.

However, filing separately sometimes has benefits. The most typical situation happens when one spouse has a great deal of medical expenses or other deductions that are based on total income. By reducing income, you can increase the amount you’re able to deduct.

Another reason to file separately involves potential tax liability. If you file jointly, then both spouses are liable for any taxes, interest, and possible penalties that may arise from a return. A separate return insulates each spouse from the tax liabilities of the other.

Whether you file jointly or separately is up to you, so it pays to work things out both ways and see which one leaves you in a better position.

Changing Tax Benefits

Getting married also affects a host of other tax issues. Here’s a partial list:

  • Low-income taxpayers may be eligible for a larger earned income tax credit than when they were single, but typically only if they file jointly.
  • Spouses who don’t work are able to make contributions to IRAs if their spouses have enough earned income from their jobs or other work.
  • If you live in a state that recognizes community property between spouses, then it can have a marked impact on your returns if you file separately.
  • If one spouse has access to perks like a flexible health benefits plan at work, both spouses’ medical expenses are eligible, allowing both to reap tax savings from using the flex plan to set aside money for health-care costs.
  • Some other tax benefits aren’t available for separate filers, including the adoption credit, educational tax credits, and deductions for student loan interest. In addition, if one spouse itemizes, both have to itemize even if the other spouse would potentially be better off with a standard deduction.

Taxes can get confusing in a hurry. But by spending a little time thinking through how your trip down the aisle will change your tax situation, you can avoid a more painful experience down the road.

Gay married couples look to high court on benefits

New wedding story for Rita on Coronation Street

Coronation Street, ITV1, Monday, 7.30pm

THEY say what goes around comes around, and it’s true for Coronation Street’s Rita Sullivan. In 1977, two months before the Queen celebrated her Silver Jubilee, Rita married Len Fairclough.

And now, 35 years on, Rita is about to tie the knot once more – circumstances permitting. Actress Barbara Knox, who plays Rita, rarely gives interviews but is so excited about the storyline she’s happy to give viewers a taste of what’s in store when she weds Dennis Tanner (Philip Lowrie).

“It’s fantastic actually, you know,” she beams. “Both for me as an actress, and for people in real life, to see characters getting married at this age. It’s a very good story for older people.”

article_mpuAdvertisement

Knox, who turns 79 this year, thinks soaps often pander to young people, and she’s glad Coronation Street is an exception.

“Everything’s for kids. Even television’s for kids, and I just thought this is so brilliant! Whoever thought it up, it’s wonderful for all of us – invigorating and different and lovely. I hope you will enjoy it.”

Nothing ever goes to plan with Corrie weddings and the latest is no exception. Dennis left the Street in 1968 but, when he returned in 2011, he and Rita were soon flirting like teenagers again. They now plan to marry 48 years after they first met.

However, loan shark Rick Neelan (Greg Wood), who paved the way for the demise of barmaid Tina McIntyre’s father Joe, has other ideas – and kidnaps Rita.

Not since she was trapped in the tram-wrecked Kabin has TV’s favourite newsagent been in so much peril. It’s nice to see Rita has finally got the right man.

“At last!” agrees Knox, who proceeds to show me a series of ring boxes. “Having played this part for over 40 years, I’ve had several engagement rings,” the Oldham-born actress explains, showing each in turn, from Len’s to the one from Ted Sullivan. Her latest used to belong to Dennis’ mum, Elsie Tanner.

“They have no value,” explains Knox. “I kept them because I feel the guardian of the character.”

She was hands-on with Rita’s wedding, from her hat and shoes to the flowers, suits, top hats, and the dress. She’s is careful not to give too much away, but Rita gets to the altar in a very unusual way.

“After being nabbed and thrown about a bit, the dress survives simply because of ’a certain element’,” she says.

When Rick threatens to throw Rita into a canal, you might imagine a stunt person would step in, but Knox was having none of it. “That is me!” she exclaims. “That was very scary, the manhandling. It was right at the edge of this water. Ooh, it was awful.”
