Wentworth Weddings Custom-Designed to Frame Priceless Memories

/PRNewswire/ – Like the silk moire wedding dress Sarah Osgood Jones wore when she married Mark Hunking Wentworth in Portsmouth in 1844, weddings at Wentworth By the Sea Hotel Spa are exquisite examples of craftsmanship, fine materials and attention to detail. The dress is on display in local Strawbery Banke Museum’s exhibition “Thread” (http://www.strawberybanke.org). The wedding expertise is on display daily at Wentworth By the Sea Hotel (http://www.wentworth.com) and, like the dress, reflects experience and knowledge stitched together with the custom tailoring that puts the spotlight where it belongs.

“The current trend is to choose a dramatic backdrop or an unusual venue,” commented Gina Damiano, director of catering at Wentworth By the Sea. “Our historic hotel, with its Victorian wedding cake architecture, lush gardens and expansive reception areas, certainly fits that description. But we also provide all the back-of-the-house elements that the perfect wedding requires and many options, from packages to completely customized plans.”

Named to the Conde Nast Traveler and Travel + Leisure lists of the “best hotels in the world,” Wentworth orchestrates all the components a great wedding needs. Menu choices range from the most traditional to the casual, developed in partnership with on-site Executive Chef John Welch and paired with an extensive wine cellar.

As one enthusiastic couple wrote on WeddingWire.com, “We looked all over New England … wanted a place that was sophisticated, classy, on the water, held quite a few people, but simple all at once! We are so happy we chose to have our special day at Wentworth by the Sea.”

To showcase its wedding capabilities, twice a year, the Catering Department invites couples who have booked their weddings at Wentworth to a “Grand Tasting” in the hotel that puts the sensory variety of color, taste and sound on display, along with florists, photographers, cake designers, lighting artists, bands and DJs, transportation experts and other partners who have made Wentworth the wedding venue of choice on the New England seacoast. “Couples tell us that because we work with various vendors, all top-notch, the process of making decisions about the reception elements is very easy,” Damiano said.

“We understand that each couple wants to make a statement and that their wedding must express the way they want their guests to think of them,” Damiano observed. “That means that no two Wentworth weddings are the same. We work to understand what’s important to this particular couple – food, service, budget, our location, history, architectural details?” Packages include the Little Harbor Celebration package, with a complimentary stay the evening of the wedding in the honeymoon suite, open bar, food, flowers, cake and linens.

“The ultimate compliment we’ve received is ‘I didn’t have to worry,’” said General Manager Frank Wetenkamp. “The bride enjoyed her own party because once she walked through the door she saw that every detail was in place, exactly as she’d requested.”

Veteran Wedding Planner Sets Up Shop In Mahwah

Twenty-one years ago, James Anthony was a college student who started DJing parties to pick up some extra cash. “I saw from working at weddings how chaotic the day could be for the bride and groom, so I got the idea for this business, and started it while I was still in college,” Anthony said.

Pure Platinum Party Entertainment was formed on the idea that multiple wedding services could be offered and coordinated through one company. The business started out offering clients photography, vdeography and entertainment options all for the big day.

“I started realizing that there were great things I could do to help my clients’ weddings go smoothly,” Anthony said. “Like, if I sat down the photographer, videographer and entertainment before the reception, it allowed for a much more organized party with these different people all being on the same page. At other parties, they were all meeting each other first-time when they got there. I knew my way would be better.”

Anthony’s idea worked. Since 1991, his award-winning business has successfully grown to the point where he is the consultant in several area David’s Bridals in NY and NJ, chatting with brides about booking while they try on gowns. Until last month, Anthony, his staff, and the network of entertainment, photo and video professionals he works with did not have a centralized location.

“We knew Mahwah would be perfect,” he said. “It is centrally located in our service area, and we have such a large clientele base in Mahwah that we knew we needed to be here.”

Pure Platinum Party Entertainment held a soft opening of its new flagship location, at 180 Franklin Turnpike, last month.

According to Anthony, the dedicated space will allow the business to expand. “We are growing into a full-service day-of.” The company is adding services like wedding planning, invitations, flowers and limousines to its offerings. “We want to be innovative, and allow our potential clients to see everything that we do. For us, this space will become kind of like an expo.”

Up until this point, the firm only planned weddings. However, with the new location ready, Anthony said he’d begin coordinate other, smaller parties like Super Sweet 16s, Christenings, fundraisers, birthdays, anniversaries, etc.

Even with the new tasks the firm is taking on, the owner says he will remain a “hands-on,” as he has always been. “We will still have three to four meetings with a client before the wedding, and focus on customer services,” he said.

By combining some new services with his 21-year-old work ethic, Anthony said he is excited for what the future holds. “I think I’ve always been a true romantic, and for me, I have a passion for brining out what the day really means to the bride and groom. I am so excited to have our Mahwah office to help us do that even better.”

Details, details: Wedding-planning elements to remember

Planning a wedding comes with a list of attention-stealing elements, from the venue and music to the flowers and food. But don’t overlook these 15 difference-making details that can make your celebration really stand out.

1. Remember a pretty hanger for your dress: It’s a tiny detail, but when your photographer takes the classic photo of your dress hanging up before you put it on, you don’t want to ruin the shot with a plastic or wire hanger.

2. Pack your cell phone charger: You’ll probably get a bunch of calls on your wedding day from frazzled guests and anxious family members who need fast answers. Make sure your phone is fully charged — and then put someone else in charge of answering it.

3. Pack a wedding night bag: Put together an overnight bag packed with toiletries, sexy lingerie and anything you need for the next morning. Then ask a bridesmaid to drop it off for you at your wedding night room.

4. Change your name (if that’s the plan!): If you’re taking his name, you’ll need to replace your Social Security card, driver’s license and passport.

5. Bring extra cash: Whether it’s tipping your hairstylist, the band or the hotel bellhop, you want to have some extra cash on hand.

6. Write your thank-you speech: While you don’t have to give a full public address, it is nice for the bride and groom to thank those who supported them through the wedding planning.

7. Assign someone to collect your gifts: There are enough horror stories of couples who forget to bring their gifts home — and never see them again. Appoint a relative or friend to gather the goods and keep them until you get back from your honeymoon.

8. Have someone pick up your dress: Whether you change into a going away outfit after the reception or don’t want to take off your dress until you get to the hotel room, make sure someone is available after the wedding to pick up your dress and hang on to it for you.

9. Pack an emergency day-of kit: Put together an emergency kit with bobby pins, a sewing kit, safety pins, clear nail polish, extra hose, bandages, aspirin, antacids, tissues and anything else you think you might need. Even better, ask a bridesmaid to do this for you.

10. Eat dinner (and cake!): Remember all the time you spent deliberating over tastings? Now it’s time to enjoy the fruits of your labor.

11. Feed your bridal party: Your bridesmaids are probably going to be too busy before the ceremony to stop for a meal. Set aside time for lunch with sandwiches, chips, fruit and other snacks.

12. Give gifts to your bridal party: Show them how much you appreciate all of their help over the past few months with a personal gift for each attendant.

13. Make sure to have “something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue”: If you have specific items in mind (such as your best friend’s veil), be sure to arrange for them in advance.

14. Create an itinerary: Just because you know the schedule for the day forward and backward doesn’t mean everyone does. Make sure your relatives know where they need to be and when.

15. Enjoy the day: Take a deep breath, realize that everything will be fine, and concentrate on simply taking it all in.

(PRWEB) May 30, 2012

Bridesmaid.com, which is owned and operated by The Dessy Group and under the editorial direction of Carey Gordon, The Dessy Group’s Social Media Director, is a complete resource for brides and bridesmaids-to-be.

The new site offers wedding party fashion from bridesmaid and wedding dresses to flowergirl dresses and men’s tuxedos. There is also a large selection of wedding party accessories to outfit an entire bridal party including jewelry, shoes, clutches and more. Along with wedding party fashion and accessories, Bridesmaid.com offers a blog which is updated daily. It is filled with gorgeous wedding inspiration, wedding DIY ideas and general tips and advice for today’s modern bridesmaid and bride.

The Dessy Group was originally known as A M Rosenthal, established 1939.

Founder Margot Rosenthal is credited with the veil and attendants headpieces in this Modern Bride photo at the Plaza Hotel NYC 1949. In the 1950′s, her daughter Ronnie and Ronnie’s husband Andrew took over the business and added bridesmaid dresses to the Dessy lines.

Now known as The Dessy Group, the business continues as a leading manufacturer of bridesmaid dresses, social occasion, flowergirls and destination wedding gowns under the labels Dessy Collection, After Six, Alfred Sung and After Six Wedding Dresses.

Alfred Sung is a Canadian fashion designer, producing apparel and perfume for men and women. He is a minimalist who emanated qualities of simplicity, ease, sophistication and classicism.

After Six has remained the largest men’s formalwear manufacturer from its inception through today. It all began at the turn of the last century when men going formal wore tails and wing collars. Fast-forward to today and the elegant black tuxedo still sends a message of personal style.

Following the success of the Lela Rose wedding collection, and the much talked about dress designs Lela Rose created for Jenna Bush’s “house party”, it seemed only natural that the Lela Rose Bridesmaid collection would follow.

Sondra Celli has found her (sparkly) calling

While many of this year’s wedding dress trends draw heavily on Kate Middleton’s elegant and restrained lace-sleeved gown, Sondra Celli caters to a slightly more ornate bride-to-be.

For 30-plus years, the Waltham-based dress designer has been creating highly decorated wedding gowns doused with bling: crystals, rhinestones, and occasionally miniature mirrors. Celli’s gowns are status symbols within Gypsy communities, and her customer base has only grown since the premiere of the TLC series “My Big Fat American Gypsy Wedding” in April.

“We’ve been doing bling designs for years,” said Celli, 54. “The Gypsies love anything that’s celebrity-like.”

Celli’s clientele, while it is mostly word-of-mouth, is far from small. Though she and her in-house staff of 11 are Boston-based, the majority of their gown shipments go to North Augusta, S.C.,
a town across the river from Augusta, Ga., with a large population of Travelers, Gypsies of Irish or Scottish descent.

Dresses can run, on average, from $8,500 to $20,000, and often weigh close to 80 pounds, depending on the amount of decoration, she says.

Celli first began designing for the Gypsy community when she was living in Manhattan after graduating from the Fashion Institute of Technology in 1978.

“I had been selling my dresses to Nieman and Saks and a few other high-end retailers, when out of the blue, I was getting a ton of orders from all of these stores on the same street.”

Puzzled, Celli called a client in Chicago, an experienced designer, for answers.

“She goes to me, ‘You’re selling to Gypsies,’ ” she said. “I’ve been working for them ever since.”

Demand for the gowns and accessories has been on the rise since the TLC reality show began to air, drawing an average of 1.6 million viewers a week. The season finale is Sunday.

(The term “Gypsy” refers to anyone who identifies with that community, though their family heritage and history may differ. Some reject the term as a slur, preferring to identify by familial descent. According to the Smithsonian Center for Education, the Rom are generally of Serbian, Russian, or Austrian-Hungarian descent, for example, while Romanichals are of English heritage.)

“The phone does not stop ringing,” said Farrah Derderian, Celli’s assistant and head “rhinestone girl.” “And it’s wedding season, so this is prime time for us.”

Derderian, 25, started working for Celli in 2006 as a college intern and has remained on staff, making dresses, teaching other employees rhinestone-ing techniques, and managing inventory.

“It was my junior year at Lasell, and my friend asked me if I wanted a design job. It was a local designer and it sounded like a great opportunity.”

The store produces more than just wedding gowns.

“We make party dresses, Sweet Sixteen dresses, just about any occasion where a dress might be necessary,” says Celli.

So it’s no surprise that Priscilla Kelly, 14, of Douglasville, Ga., a Romanichal Gypsy, contacted the store in search of a “Queen of Hearts” dress and dancing outfit for her family’s Halloween party.

“Sondra took my idea [for a Queen of Hearts dress] and filled in the blanks,” said Kelly. “It was the most beautiful thing I’ve seen — ever.”

To complement Kelly’s Barbie pink ball gown with a bedazzled heart-shaped bust and ruffled train, Celli and her team also constructed shorts and a fringed bustier, both made entirely of rhinestones, as well as matching go-go boots, covered in 43,000 Swarovski crystals.

The sparkling combo has been Derderian’s favorite project thus far.

“Those outfits were a challenge, but I love that,” she said. “We don’t always get to see customers in the outfits we make, so watching Priscilla try them on was really exciting.”

Kelly said that while “My Big Fat American Gypsy Wedding” does capture some of her community’s traditions, others have been slightly misconstrued.

“Yes, of course I love big dresses and bling, but not everybody does that,” she said. “It’s not something that we’re ‘supposed’ to do as Gypsies.”

Celli will be featured in a spinoff series set to premiere in early fall, designing a variety of dresses for clients from all walks of life.

“I’m a lucky girl,” Celli said. “These people give me freedom to be creative, and combine my vision with theirs, and I wouldn’t change that for anything.”
