Couple ‘Takes the Plunge’ at Raging Waves

Samantha Kolar wore a bikini underneath her traditional wedding dress and veil Saturday so she and her better half could properly take the plunge as the first couple to get married at Raging Waves water park.

Kolar, 25, and Andy Lee, 34, both of Plano, are season pass holders and enjoy bringing their family to Raging Waves. It seemed a natural fit to this family-oriented couple to celebrate their wedding at the water park on Yorkville’s north side.

“We wanted a fun and unconventional wedding that was a true celebration. We wanted it to be a blast and fun for our kids,” Lee said.

Lee has three children from a prior marriage: Elena (10), Angelina (8) and Gavin (7). Kolar and Lee together have Andrew (4), Matthew (2) and Juno (1 ½).

Lee said he’s quite a jokester and when he told family and friends of their wedding venue that they didn’t believe him. Since then, Lee said they had been supportive of the idea.

In lieu of walking down the aisle, the bride walked across the waterpark on her father’s arm as “Pachelbel Canon in D” played on loudspeakers across the park.

Meanwhile, the groom and the guests waited on the observation deck of The Boomerang water ride. Then, there was a quick ceremony where Kolar and Lee recited their vows in front of family, friends and the crashing waters of The Boomerang behind them. In his vows, Lee referred to the adventure of their relationship.

Immediately after their first kiss as husband and wife, they walked to the top of The Boomerang, quickly removed their formal attire to reveal bathing suits underneath, and came down The Boomerang sharing an inner tube, taking their first plunge of marriage together.

The groom’s brother-in-law, Rev. Dan Otte, conducted the ceremony.

“I’ve never done anything like this,” Otte said. “This wedding is very unique and a lot like Sam and Andy.”

The couple have been together for 5 ½ years and have been planning this wedding for six months.

Lorayne Lee, mother of the groom, first suggested the idea of marrying at Raging Waves.

“Raging Waves has been phenomenal,” Lee said. “They have been great making suggestions and helping out with everything. They’ve gone above and beyond. They even delivered great weather.”

Albert Shelton, Food and Beverage Manager at Raging Waves, said he felt a combination of pride and surprise when he learned of the couple’s intentions to marry at the water park.

Shelton said the park handles large group outings quite often, but this was the first wedding. Members of the management team brainstormed ideas alongside the bride and groom and came up with the idea to use The Boomerang.

Fair Barn Holds Open House

With early summer heating up all around us, wedding planning is in high gear too, says a spokesman for the Fair Barn, in Pinehurst.

On Sunday, June 24, the Fair Barn invites brides-to-be, couples and event planners to a complimentary open house from 2 to 5 p.m., where they will enjoy tasty appetizers and refreshments while touring this unique facility.

Area wedding professionals will also be on hand to discuss different services they offer, including wedding coordinating, decorating, transportation and catering.

Built as an exhibition hall for the Sandhills Fair, one of the largest country fairs in the Southeast, the building served as an exhibition hall from 1915 through 1925. Partially destroyed by a tornado in 1932, the barn was repaired and used as a stable for 60 years.

Restoration and reconstruction efforts led by the Pinehurst Historic Preservation Foundation began in 1996, and in 2002, the Fair Barn had its official grand opening as a multi-use event facility. The Fair Barn is now a popular venue for wedding ceremonies, receptions, rehearsal dinners, concerts, fundraisers and community events.

“The Fair Barn is a beautiful facility with a wonderful history, and we are very excited about the open house and meeting all the brides-to-be,” says the spokesman.

The open house is sponsored by Ward Productions, Treasured Memories Weddings and Events, White Rabbit Catering, Kirk Tours and Limousine, and Maggie’s Farm Flowers and Events.

The Fair Barn is located at 200 Beulah Hill Road South, Pinehurst.

Shotgun Wedding Quintet plays Crocker Art Museum on Thursday

Calling their hip-hop-inflected jazz band Shotgun Wedding Quintet makes perfect sense for the members of the popular Bay Area collective.

Even though the two most obvious influences of the group are hip-hop through its MC Dublin and jazz through its three multi-instrumentalists, the group merges many ideas in its music and performances. Shotgun Wedding makes its Sacramento debut Thursday at the Crocker Art Museum’s Jazz in the Courtyard series.

Composed of Dublin (MC), Joe Cohen (sax, organ, synthesizer, piano), and pDubL (pronounced P-Double, on drums, sampler) and Adam Theis (bass, synth bass, trombone, tuba), the group is an offshoot of the much-larger Jazz Mafia, which includes the Realistic Orchestra and the Shotgun Wedding Hip-Hop Symphony among numerous manifestations of the musicians. Besides playing their own music, the musicians play with a who’s who of modern music across all genres, including Carlos Santana, Beck, Thomas Dolby, Peter Rowan and KRS-One, to name a few.

Even though Shotgun Wedding works as a collective group, the music was written by Cohen and Theis either individually or together. Theis has been the central figure of the Jazz Mafia groups from the beginning. A first-rate composer and instrumentalist, Theis already has an acclaimed jazz symphony to his credit, but he enjoys the communal efforts of this smaller group.

“It’s totally a collective,” Theis said from his San Francisco home. “That’s always been the premise of the group. We want it to be equal, collaborative.”

The collaboration comes with its own issues and compromises, but Theis feels the result is worth it.

“The music we come up with, we would never come up with ever if it was just me, or just me and one other person. That’s the beauty of it,” he said. “Everybody has a stake in it and there’s something really special about that, being in a project that’s not the Adam Theis group or something.”

The smaller band also has greater adaptability. Since all the players are multi-instrumentalists, they usually change instruments after each song.

“We don’t have to do the same set every night,” Theis said. “We talk about it every time we have a show – to try to fit what we’re playing to the venue.”

Shotgun Wedding released its eponymous first album in 2007, and its newest recording, “Tales from the Barbary Coast,” came out last year. Theis said there’s a profound difference in the two albums.

“The first record was done in a real professional way. We did a lot of multi-tracking; we all weren’t even there for every track,” Theis said.

“It was a long process and we were really proud of the record, but we wanted to make the second one another way.”

For “Tales” they recorded live in the studio as much as possible, trying to get the music done in as few takes as possible.

“Which is not as common in the hip-hop (and) rock realm, but in the jazz world it’s very common. So we kind of married the two. What we wanted to avoid was something that doesn’t reflect the live experience. It’s basically channeling that live spirit, because we’re a live band.”

Wedding planning in the digital age

iDO

The days of binders stuffed with guest lists, vendors and pictures of dresses are a thing of the past for couples planning a wedding. The Internet and mobile applications have allowed wedding planning to go digital, streamlining the process for couples, families and wedding planners.

According to surveys by the magazine sites Brides and The Knot, tech is on the rise in the world of weddings, with 65 percent of couples now setting up special sites to manage RSVPs, stream video of the ceremony and/or reception and keep guests in the loop.

“We always encourage (a wedding website),” says wedding planner Amanda Lukefahr of Lukefield Special Events in Jackson. “You can track the budget, track the guest list, so that’s a really good tool. Also, if you’re having a wedding where a lot of guests are from out of town, they can go to website for information about the area.”

Rosie Conrad, bridal consultant and owner of All Occasions, agrees that wedding websites are valuable for couples who need to keep several people in the loop. “Our couples often do have a website,” she says. “If you’re doing a wedding at a distance, you can get online and get better fix on the details. (The website also) keeps your wedding people informed about schedules.”

When it comes to planning the wedding, online resources are equally valuable.

“I have a lot of girls come to me who have been searching the Internet,” Conrad says. “That can help the bride narrow down her desires and get a clear picture of what she’s trying for.” For example, she says, a bride can download photos of flowers she likes and show them to a florist. Then the bride and florist can work together on the price or more cost-effective flowers to achieve the same effect.

One in five couples use mobile apps for planning, including chasing down vendors. But when it comes to working with an online vendor, Conrad advises couples to do their homework.

“No. 1, if it’s a local vendor, get references,” she says. “A good vendor should have them. Check out their background. Good vendors you’ll probably hear about by word-of-mouth, already.”

And if you’re using an Internet-based service, Conrad says the same rules apply. “See what other options there are,” she says. “Check some other places online. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.”

Nearly one in five couples go paperless for invitations or save-the-dates. Many of those who have preserved the tradition of paper invites have dispensed with the inserts usually tucked inside envelopes, opting for email or web tools for RSVPs, maps and details on destinations or related events.

Photo websites let couples upload photos that can be used for save-the-dates and other items like guest books with photos, Conrad says.

With the prevalence of camera-equipped phones and social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter, photos can be a touchy subject for the bride and groom — especially when guests take it upon themselves to post photos of the big day.

“Not every couple wants their picture on Facebook and Twitter,” Lukefahr says. “With camera phones and video, it’s hard to control because everyone has one.” She advises wedding guests to think twice and use common sense.

But, she says, if a bride and groom provide a password-protected place to upload photos from the event, feel free to share.

When it comes Facebook or Twitter, Lukefahr and Conrad agree both the couple and their guests should be wary.

Lukefahr says most of the brides she works with don’t put a lot of information about the wedding on Facebook before the big day. “A lot of times before the wedding they keep it private,” she says. “It is a touchy subject because people you haven’t invited can see it.” After the wedding, though, Lukefahr says that changes, with many couples posting pictures from the event.

The main thing to remember when it comes to social networking, Conrad says, is to remain socially appropriate because “once it’s out there on the Internet, it’s there.”
