Sterdan’s wedding gift ideas for ‘Chavril’

What do you get for the couple that has everything? Well, everything except talent, respect and a lick of sense between them?

Tough question. But it’s one that millions of fans around the globe need to consider now that Nickelback’s Chad Kroeger and pop-rock princess Avril Lavigne are tying the knot.

Sure, both halves of the newly christened Chavril — which, fittingly enough, sounds like the name of a multi-national conglomerate — are gazillionaires. But that doesn’t mean they don’t deserve some wedding gifts when they mosh down the aisle. And heck, the way the music biz is going, they’re probably willing to sell seats at the head table to anyone willing to subsidize this unholy alliance. So if you’re interested in being part of their special, special day, get out your chequebook and pony up. Here’s what they need for the wedding — and the weeks of blissful coexistence that are sure to follow:

• Pink-and-black, strategically ripped designer wedding dress for Avril.

• Canadian tuxedo (aka denim jacket jeans) for Chad.

• Ed Hardy suits for the groomsmen.

• Bedazzled g-strings and bustiers for the bridesmaids.

• Multi-tiered stage with motorized risers and 10,000-watt sound system for the ceremony.

• Performance of Wedding March (and medley of their individual hits) by frenemy Chantal Kreviazuk.

• Dry ice (to be swirled about during the wedding vows).

• Pyro (to be set off when they say ‘I do’).

• Diamond-encrusted tongue studs to be exchanged during ceremony.

• Gentlemen’s club rental for wedding reception.

• Performance by Sum 41 at the festivities (Deryck Whibley will also be parking cars).

• Catering by Tim Hortons, Chuck E. Cheese and Grey Goose.

• Separate custom-painted tour buses for the honeymoon.

• Three-night stay in bridal suite at Hard Rock Hotel in Vegas (mini-bar not included).

• Lifetime supply of eyeliner and hair dye (Avril will need some too).

• Engraved Jagermeister dispenser for their breakfast nook.

• His-and-hers stripper poles for the bedroom.

• Room above the garage where Chad’s brother Mike can live.

• Matching Lamborghinis with breathalyser-ignition devices.

• Earplugs for everyone in a five-mile radius for when they start writing songs together.

• Birth control. Lots and lots of birth control.

• Laser treatments to remove ‘Avril Chad: True Love 4Ever!!’ tattoos.

• Two good divorce lawyers.

A Special Day (Online)

With attention to detail a wedding planner might envy, Mr. Dale texted guests; reminded them in person as they arrived for the Aug. 6, 2011, ceremony; and messaged television stars including Jimmy Fallon and Kim Kardashian, hoping for a retweet.

The celebrities did not respond, but Mr. Dale achieved his goal: to win the Twitter popularity contest known as trending.

“It felt like something we could do that was once-in-a-lifetime special,” Mr. Dale, 25, said of the effort.

Mr. Masse, 25, who does not have phone numbers for some of his friends but communicates via Twitter direct message, said the hashtag’s trending “was just supercool.”

He added: “I’m a pretty chill person and if anything huge happens I try to downplay it. When the photographer told us” — he had set up his phone to receive alerts — “I actually hugged Ed and we all stood up and cheered.”

What to get the social-media savvy couple who have everything (including all the Facebook “likes” they could ever need)? Increasingly, pals are pitching in to try to make a wedding hashtag trend locally.

(Last year’s British royal wedding was the only one ever to trend internationally; only televised weddings like Ms. Kardashian’s last year and a fictional one on the show “Gossip Girl” tend to trend nationally.)

Twitter does not track local or personalized trends and has no way to search them historically (if it happens, take a screenshot, pronto), said Alexandra Valasek, a spokeswoman. But judging by a search of “wedding trending” plus the requests for help in celebrity Twitter feeds, the trend is, well, trending.

“My best friends are getting gay married. @billmaher will you rt? You can come but there’s no more chicken paillard. #weddingofthecentury,” tweeted @ScottDuquette, who also appealed to Joan Rivers and Ellen Barkin. None responded, though trend-seekers take note: the company’s algorithm favors sheer numbers of people using the hashtag, meaning Grandma’s tweet is as helpful as, say, Lady Gaga’s.

Success is easier in a town than in a city, because the change in ratio of users talking about a topic is what makes it trend, Ms. Valasek said.

“We thought maybe we could do it because what else would be going on,” said Jason Burt, 30, whose successful scheme to make #chopchop #lozanowedding trend in the Detroit suburb Northville, Mich., included reminding friends with dormant Twitter accounts how to use the service. (“Chop-chop” is a refrain of the groom, Carlos Lozano, who is early everywhere.)

The online popularity crown is unlikely to replace traditional presents, but couples prize it because it can’t be registered for, much less bought, and asking for it would be like requesting a surprise party.

“I think I wanted to ask for it but I didn’t,” Burt Herman, 39, said of e-mails he sent to guests that included the hashtag for his Feb. 19 wedding. (Mr. Herman, a founder of Storify, had created the hashtag because he planned to use his company’s narrative-building platform to assemble a social media wedding album.)

Making a hashtag trend is delicate business, especially if the couple learn a campaign is on.

“It’s their day: you don’t want to disappoint them or have them feel bad if no one responds,” said Ari Brock, 35, who debated starting an effort via his best man’s speech at the Oct. 9, 2011, wedding of Aaron Snyder, 34, and Jamie Light, 30.

The couple met on Twitter in 2009, when the groom noticed the bride’s consistently funny missives when he searched the Los Angeles Dodgers hashtag. Mr. Brock feared not enough guests were on Twitter, so he asked the company if it might honor the tweethearts. Jack Dorsey, a founder, obliged: “@JamieLight and @asnyd may you always follow each other.”

Gretchen and Bill Voth, who married in Charlotte, N.C., on June 18, 2011, are obsessed with Twitter, said Mr. Voth, 33, a social media consultant who sent missives while waiting near the altar. But the ceremony was distraction enough that the pair did not learn of Operation Trend until #vothwedding made the list.

“We had nothing to do with its initiation or even feeding the beast,” said Ms. Voth, 31. “We got to sit back and watch the public display of love.”

The hashtag trending, she added, “was one of the best, most unique gifts our friends could give us.”

Are Wedding Blogs Ruining Your Wedding?

Whenever I give advice on how to pull off a fabulous wedding on a budget I always include a strange tip: STOP reading wedding blogs. The tip is strange because of course, I write a wedding blog, and usually I’m giving this advice on other wedding blogs. My rationale though is that once you have your wedding planned, you need to stop coming up with new ideas for it. Those new ideas cost money and scrapping your old ideas costs money.

I’m starting to wonder though if I should begin to add that advice to all wedding planning. I’m beginning to worry that rather than help brides and grooms in their planning, the huge amount of wedding planning advice and photographs available on blogs is actually hurting couples trying to make realistic and thoughtful decisions.

For starters, there’s the “advice.” Wedding blogs are written by a variety of people from current and recent brides to professionals in the industry to people who simply REALLY love weddings. Although most writers are well-meaning, their experience and points of view vary wildly, as does their advice. Research any subject from tipping etiquette to groom’s fashions and you’ll find conflicting advice.

Then, there are the photographs. You’ve probably heard that every picture tells a story, but what you haven’t heard is that there’s an untold story behind every picture. That gorgeous tablescape you’re looking at and wondering how to copy for your own wedding? It’s not real. It’s part of a styled “inspirational” photo shoot. Those bouquets are real, but they cost $500 each and were created in a totally different climate from the one in which you’re getting married.

The subject of the photos can also be damaging. With every real wedding (and yes, they’re all real weddings on my blog) I publish on the GigMasters Wedding Blog I almost always include photos of the bride’s dress, the shoes, the rings, and the flowers. I love these photos. They’re fun to look at and I hope they give brides ideas for their own accessories and flowers. But, I also worry that they’re giving brides and grooms the wrong idea, the idea that the accessories or objects of your wedding are more important than the people. I worry that somewhere there’s a couple who spent so much time on wedding blogs that they have a wedding album filled with pictures of things, not people.

I’m also starting to worry about the mental health of some of these wedding bloggers. Bloggers are always looking for the “something new” and so they begin to encourage less and less realistic ideas. From buying more than one multi-thousand dollar wedding dress for the day to trashing the dress you have after the wedding, to renting living room furniture and a game station for a “groom’s room,” what are these bloggers thinking? Let’s not forget about the well-known blog that advised brides not to choose an “unfortunate looking bridal party” if you want your wedding published on a blog. When did seeing your wedding online become the point of getting married?

So how do you know if blogs are helping or hurting you? Ask yourself some questions:

1. How do I feel after I look at this blog; energized to start planning or depressed?
2. Is this blog trying to help me or sell me something?
3. Are there a variety of budgets and ethnicities represented on this blog? Do they show anything that resembles what I want, what I can afford, or what I look like?
4. Am I starting to think more about the “things” associated with my wedding and less about the people?
5. Am I ignoring the advice of my wedding vendors in favor of wedding advice given by an anonymous blogger?

Answering these five questions should help you decide if it’s time to step away from the computer, or if you’re getting the help you need from blogs.

If you visit my blog and don’t like the answers to any of these questions, make sure to let me know!

What Type of Wedding Dress Do You Imagine for Jennifer Aniston?

Jennifer Aniston Wedding DressesGetty; Landov; INF; JPI

Yes, she’s engaged, yes, we’re excited, and yes, we’re already thinking about what she’ll wear. Jennifer Aniston‘s big news isn’t even 24 hours old yet, but already, the Internet is teeming with speculation about wedding dress designers and colors. So we decided to imagine, too.

Aniston hasn’t worn many white dresses on the red carpet in her time, however, there are a few standouts. In June, at the AFI Life Achievement Awards in Los Angeles, she flaunted her gorgeous gams in a sexy low-cut Burberry gown with a thigh-high slit (left). A year earlier, she worked a girly, shimmering Valentino frock for a Horrible Bosses premiere in London (second from left).

Even before that, there was the simple white sheath she wore to a Bounty Hunter photo call in Madrid (second from right). And for the Oscars in 2009, she went for full-on glamour in a glitzy, strapless Valentino Haute Couture gown, finished with lots of sparkle (right).

When the time does come to go dress shopping, Aniston will likely have her pick of gorgeous gowns. But in the meantime, which silhouette do you think is best for her? Vote in our poll below!
